  1. Re: MediaRelease: Kingsley Holgate and the New Defender hit the road again

Nice photographs, and the Defender looks really good in them.

But I can't help but wonder, that the concept of such a trip in a new Defender is fundamentally different to what it would have been...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

Petri - when you switch off a unimog, it's pretty normal, like for any older truck, to hear hissing as the high pressure air slowly leaks out.
But this is usually quite soft and gentle. If it's a...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

No, it's driven by the rear axle until you turn the switch clockwise by one "click" - about 45

If you move the switch one click clockwise - 45 - then the 4x4 is engaged. Like groenconrad...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

Awesome - if it's also being restored at MogDoc I can ask for some pics directly.
Yes, a Pinzie is a lovely little thing, but not at all in the same ballpark as a Unimog.
And it does bite hard -...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

For all intents and purposes, yes - the only difference is the wheel base.
    There are two additional differences:

406 has a different reduction gear ratio in the portal axles, and has a...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

So op die gesprek van brandstofverbruik... ek het al agter gekom dat, op die trail en in die diep sand, die Mog blyk beter to doen as van die ouens met Land Cruiser 76s en seker ander 4x4s soos die...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

Daar is ietsie "larger than life" as mens langs 'n Mog staan.
Ek kry steeds daardie selfde gevoel as ek uitstap na myne toe.
Dit word glad nie oorgedra deur fotos nie.

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

Petri, alle 416 Unimogs het diff locks voor and agter. Hulle word ge aktiveer met lugdruk (nie hidrolies).
    Daardie skakelaar het 3 posities:

Dryf net op die agter as, sonder difflock (normale...

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

If you have to measure it, you can't afford fueling a UNIMOG ;-)
I have literally no idea. I just fill her up 200 litres at a time.

Re: Lockdown with a Unimog 416.......NICE!!!

Petri, I have never seen those exact levers - like Mogster said, most unimogs have their own unique tweaks, either from the factory, or in the intervening 40+ years.
Could you post a normal picture...

It is indeed a very visceral experience to drive... and wait until you try it out off-road.

Re: 4x4 Vehicle Tug of War

Absolutley. The heaviest vehicle with the most tyre surface area will usually win.
My Unimog 416 has the weakest (in terms of KW) engine compared to any high-end SUV, but I will drag any 2 of you in...

    Re: 404 mog

Paul is right - parts for 406 / 416 drivetrains are much easier to come by than 404 axles - and much tougher.
That being said, if you happen to have some 404 axles - I'm pretty sure they will stand...

Re: Where to play with a U4000

Well, there is no shortage of great trails within a couple of hours' drive from Pretoria / Johannesburg.
A U4000 / U5000 has always, in my opinion, been far too large as a recreational toy.
    The...
  17. Re: How come Paul's Unimog hasn't been snapped up yet?

It's definitely not for "everyone" no - only for a select few crazies.
BTW, both Paul (selling this Unimog), and myself, live in complexes in Johannesburg Northern suburbs.
    Where there is a will,...
  18. Re: How come Paul's Unimog hasn't been snapped up yet?

That article is from 14 years ago!

I can vouch for the fact that there are absolutely no problems with a LHD vehicle changing hands, provided it's already registered.
    Unimogs are changing hands...
  19. How come Paul's Unimog hasn't been snapped up yet?

Paul is one of the most fastidious owners that I know, and his Unimog is a true original rarity - with a camper actually made in Germany.

Re: Any update on the new Defender

Oh man, this is all just so wrong on so many levels.

    It'll be...
  21. Re: Video: Unimog experience, Buffelspruit dry riverbed

Damage not too extensive at all.
My own cuts are also nicely healed up

I'm taking a bit of time to improve a couple of things, so the Mog will be in pieces for a couple of months probably....
  22. Re: Video: Unimog experience, Buffelspruit dry riverbed

Yes, I believe I'll be able to source everything. Although it's only the window(s) really that broke, the rest looks repairable.
  23. Re: Video: Unimog experience, Buffelspruit dry riverbed

Ek stem heeltemal saam met jou. Almal maak foute, mens leer en gaan aan.

  27. Re: Unimog passenger wanted (Tomorrow) - epic river day trip

Video angles are quite deceiving. A Unimog has remarkably good side-angle capability.
Strangely, I've had her atworse side-angles before with no problems.

It's the particular set of conditions in...
  28. Unimog passenger wanted (Tomorrow) - epic river day trip

    Hi Guys,

    This is super short notice!

Doing an epic day trip tomorrow...
  29. Re: Video: Unimog experience, Buffelspruit dry riverbed

    Hi Wooky!

Well, for starters, we're doing this riverbed trip this Saturday (2 Jun 2018) again. I believe there is a spot or two open, but this is not for the weak-hearted.

  31. Video: Unimog experience, Buffelspruit dry riverbed

I'm usually too busy driving to capture some good video footage, but on this trip my brother managed to capture the essence of the experience:

Otherwise, sadly, I will be out of the country for work.
