Sorry to say, but the N1 all the way to Polokwane and then the R71 via Tzaneen to Phalaborwa is the best. Alternatively, the N12 from Joburg then N4 to Malelane Gate, if your destination is Kruger.

The N5 is lovely but those other roads are horribly potholed now. Dangerously so.
