  1. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

I believe the majority of three phase motors under 4kw are dual. 230v/400v. You just need to change from star to delta.
  2. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

From what I understand it will only make 230v three phase. Your motor is 380v three phase. At least that is what I understood from a previous post of yours. Hopefully and many of the smaller motors...
  3. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

This lathe is going to be so pretty I wonder if its going to be used. ;D. How is the vfd going to run a 380v motor.?Just asking cause Im electrickery challenged.
  4. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

I was going to say that smooth on makes good stuff but you need to sit down when you get a price. Why bother for a machine screw ,just use locktite .Its probably better suited and much easier.

    But...
  5. Re: Fixing a southbend lathe from the late thirtys.

Yes but it needs a dedicated 19 mm slotted bush. And if your hole was 20mm you need a 20mm slotted bush. I was too lazy to machine one so thats why I was tempted to just put the broach in the toolpost...
  6. Re: Fixing a southbend lathe from the late thirtys.

I think you are right . It would have worked in this application but maybe to much spring in metal.
  7. Re: Fixing a southbend lathe from the late thirtys.

In the last pic I was hoping to ask one of the machinests if this would work in a lathe. I never had the broach bush for a nineteen mm hole . I wonder why I could not just put the broach in the...
  8. Re: Fixing a southbend lathe from the late thirtys.

Yes shes my baby. The countershaft came out real nice.I made a pulley from some plastic as we had no aluminum. I hope its not too slippery. We are planning to use a old cambelt upside down.I never had...
  9. Fixing a southbend lathe from the late thirtys.

My mate bought a very beat up southbend 9 lathe. We are going to try get it running again.
The lathe has many problems. We have had to weld the lathe spindle up and get the gear on the end of the...

    Re: Radial arm saw

I think on a cut off saw gravity is your friend,It will prevent the blade from jamming .But on a radial the table will prevent this.

A steel carbide blade cuts relief on the left and right sides...

    Re: Radial arm saw

Interesting question. but how would a carbide blade work instead of an abrasive blade. ?The delta radial does about 2500rpm and these carbide blades work within that range. I think a normal cutoof...

  17. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

Just a bit off topic. Does Carl sub contract his work out.?
  18. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

Looking at those plaques I suspect they are cast. Those letters are quite pronounced and high. Can etching eat that deep.?

    Re: Copper still.

Is there some science to how long the vertical pipe has to be. ?On a small ten liter still like this does a 42 mm riser pipe work less effecient than a 54mm pipe. I have 42 mm pipe and only a short...
  20. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

Would love to have seen the process. I guess the original die would have been a reverse plate done laboriously on a pantagragh.

I got my head around it I think .It must be challenging to hold...
  21. Poll: Re: 1953 Colchester Student Mk1 6" gap bed - A restoration project

Those plaques are truelly beautiful. I would love to see how they did them from scratch.Very few speed and feed charts are done like that. It must have been quite an expense initially to make a stamp...
