Re: R36 Between Bambi and Lydenburg

Probably because the municipality has tried to simply divert all trucks around it rather than perform any maintenance. Somehow the fact that the town is on a major chrome ore route escapes the muppets

    Re: Old transkei

I have noticed that safety is area dependant and is reportedly tied to the local headman. For instance Hole in the Wall seemed to have a very high crime rate and throughout our trip we had people...

He quite openly admits sponsorship but that he has approached companies to work with him rather than vice versa. This seems to fit with the Alucab experience?
  4. Re: Disappointing result with T4A and Garmin Nuvi - Newbie errors?

You can have glitches with any electronic tech. When putting in a route from Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana to CKGR it wanted to route me back to Pretoria and then back on the same road to CKGR....

Re: Hard Shell Roof Top Tents

I don't own one but looked at it quite closely when I went for the Custom Leisure Tech.

the interior is quite small, IIRC it is 1.2m however it has two arms on either side which push the roof up....

    Overlander's First Aid Course

Is anyone aware of any first aid courses with a slant towards remote travel? I have completed the level 1 course every couple of years and done a level 2 once before however, all of these course tend...

Re: Ford Ranger 2.2 ability with off-road

I had the 2.2 albeit in a Mazda dress and not a 4x4 and now have a 3.2 4x4 Ford.

For me the 2.2 was an impressive performer whilst the 3.2 has left me a bit underwhelmed. Its not bad its just not...

    Did I touch a nerve?;D

I'm afraid I have only the experience of a close fishing buddy that owned the previous Grand Cherokee 4.7l V8 Petrol and had 2 repair bills totaling around R100k straight...

Once out of warranty / service plan you can expect some eye watering repair costs should anything go wrong

    Re: Romer Cooler Boxes

I am aware of this but at triple the price of my camp master cooler I would have expected it to last at least double the time however it is only marginally better than the camp master one. I would...

    Re: Romer Cooler Boxes

The wife bought me a Romer a few months ago and used it in anger for the first time at Kruger in August. I must say I was also quite disappointed in it. Ice was completely melted after a day.

    We...

    Re: Canopy Advice

Just don't get an RLD. You would be better off with a few mild steel tubes and shade clothe. It will be more waterproof and less prone to rust

Re: Koro Koro land claim - gobsmacked

Land claims are dealt with through a formal process in which the owners receive fair market value for the property. It is vastly different from a land invasion.

In very broad strokes the claimant...

Re: KNP - Letaba Restcamp - Shop on fire

Why does it beg the question on training, maintenance and equipment? I'd imagine containing the blaze on thatch buildings must be exceptionally difficult regardless of who is involved

  18. Re: What are the must watch African YouTube Overland Chanels

Christoff I think some people under-estimate what the gear costs. All very well saying cut out wind noise but that might mean a R5k mic. If youtube videos are just a hobby its hard to justify that...

For some reason I can't stand Roam's presentation style and voice. He has some really good content ideas but everytime I listen to him I end up turning off.

Re: ASPW's latest build in Oz

  23. Re: Overlanding In Southern Africa With A Suzuki Samurai

Check out Hendri Mouton on youtube. He tried it for awhile and had to upgrade to something bigger.

Personally I would stick with a "normal" vehicle for overlanding. There are enough challenges...

We need to know your planned cable sizes to tell if your fuses are correct. No point in a 30A fuse with 1.5mm cables

    Re: Maximum Starting Mileage

I suppose it depends on various factors:

    1) Starting mileage
    2) Age of the vehicle (Years)
    3) Your intended annual mileage
    4) Capacity for risk

    I purchased a relatively high mileage 3.2...
