    Re: Central Kalahari National Park

re "Molema Bush Camp – bush style campsites but unfortunately no self-drive in the game reserve allowed"

True - however it's possible to do a walking safari, which is great. The view down over the...

Re: Mkushi to Lusaka alternate route

The only time I've gone from Lusaka to Mkushi other than the GNR was many years ago scouting the Zambian Rally route - we left the GNR at Kabwe and headed east, rejoining the GNR at Mkushi. Took most...
  3. Re: Advice needed for Botswana tour driving times

We took the sand ridge road from Mababe to Savuti - to be more accurate the road between the sand ridge and the marsh itself. The marsh road leaves this road and runs east of the marsh then loops...
  4. Re: Advice needed for Botswana tour driving times

Here are some of our times (in italics) - hope this helps.

8 June - Kubu to Deception valley, CKGR, 5 hours - From Kubu Gate to Mopipi 2-1/2 hours, Mopipi to CKGR Gate 2-1/2 hours, Gate to Kori...
  5. Re: Help with January Serengeti itinerary + Moru campsites closed

I think that you need to spend time on the Mara River - the road there is beautiful from the junction near Bologonja and should be OK, although could be muddy in October. The other area which we...

    Re: Kazangula bridge news

As noted - about time. They were talking about a bridge when I was first at Kazungula in 1974, still talking on subsequent visits, and when we last crossed the river in 2017 (on a ferry which I swear...
  7. Re: Fuel consumption calculation for overlanding (planning stages)

When I first started wandering into areas where fuel range and reserve were critical I recall learning that you never pass the point at which you've used half of your fuel unless you know for sure...

    Re: Global Nomadic Overlanders

It is indeed unclear - or more accurately not explicit. The DVLA either hasn't considered the situation, or chooses not to bother with the tiny number of vehicles out of the country for long periods....

    Re: Global Nomadic Overlanders

Some people with UK-registered vehicles put the car on "SORN" status. Ethically it's OK in my view since the vehicle is not being driven on roads in the UK, however I guess it's another gray area....

    Re: Global Nomadic Overlanders

I'm not too hung up on descriptions, however we do have a home base, travel on shorter trips frequently during periods of a year or so, then take a year to travel on longer trips:

    Re: Spontaneous trip to Turkana

Brilliant! I'm reminded of stopping many times at one particular police post in Congo:
    1) Surprise that we were there at all
    2) surprise that we thought it was appropriate to stop
    3) concern that...

    Re: Spontaneous trip to Turkana

Yes you're right. We drove north from Barnleys', had to join a convoy from Kainuk to Lokichar, then on to Lodwar. We had to wait there for a couple of days because the river was in flood - impossible...

Re: Land Rover parts & Mechanic Zambia

Not a LR however just to share, we've reduced our spares kit down to:

    - spare bulbs (legally required anyway)
    - spare serpentine belt
    - spare fuses

In 5 years we've needed one fuse.

  22. Re: Uganda into Kenya Point of Entry for Visa

  23. Re: Uganda into Kenya Point of Entry for Visa

  33. Re: Self drives in the Rwanda parks without a guide?

  34. Re: Covid and extended overlanding, what will make you feel good enough to go?
