  1. Re: Backup Solar Installation Upgrade

    My bad!!! I misread.

4800w is spot on for a 5kva inverter and batteries ... you will have loads spare during the day, and extended times in winter.

Me, being in Cape Town, with winter rainfall,...
  2. Re: Backup Solar Installation Upgrade

What Monkey-D said, way too much paneling.

    My system:
A 5kva inverter runs at max at about 4kw continuous, which I don't see happening. Peaks yes.
I first tried 2.4kw, then upgrade to 3.5kw and...

Re: City of Cape Town SSEG

That is a ripoff, no really, a HUGE one.
Reminds me of the first quotes I got for SSEG commissioning. Engineers fees alone where in excess of R10k.
Man, I went ballistic on another forum. Guys...

Re: City of Cape Town SSEG

I've heard same from official at CoCT when I pushed the issue. CoCT having been in this game for 10+ years say that their infrastructure cannot handle the grid tied feedback if too many houses send...

Re: City of Cape Town SSEG

    Feeding back is like oranges.
    Self consumption is like apples.

All about generating your own power daytime (if you can use it), all daytime spare power to recharge the batteries (if you have...

Re: City of Cape Town SSEG

If you are in CoCT, having followed the process, they will replace the meter with a PAYG ITron one.

For those outside CoCT, where Conlog PAYG meters are installed, although they can be adjusted,...

Re: City of Cape Town SSEG

    My two cents on that:
There is a sweet spot where you have the convenience of the batteries ito LS AND can use them to shave off some kWh per night.
But if you go too big on batteries, remember...

Re: City of Cape Town SSEG

In line with that the others say, that meter would cost, last time I checked, R12k+ and then the install on top of that of I think it was R2k or some such.
    Price may have changed.

    So to recoup...

    Re: Evacuated tubes vs plate

Gabriel, EV tubes work very well in the WC.
As you know, mine lasted 9.5 years before I had to replace the system.

But as I learnt, the 1st time you install one, you get a ROI.
    The 2nd time you...

    Re: Victron MK3, Pretoria area?

    Sounds like a setting problem.
And firmware upgrade may or may not help necessarily, even though it is good to upgrade if you have a chance.

    Option 1:
There are dipswitches that you can check...

    Re: Victron MK3, Pretoria area?

    Ask Jaco from https://go-solarelectrical.co.za

He has sent cables via courier all over to do exactly this kind of thing.

But, what problem and what version is the inverter on?

Re: Taking our SOHO off grid

I asked the exact same question years ago around pool pumps and solar, R30k solar pump vs a refurbished 1.1kw pump @ +-R1.5k
And when the solar pump needs replacement, they priced a small arm vs...
  14. Re: Price on Smart victron mppt controller

The going price is +-R12k if you shopped hard, so if you don't take it, tell me where that I can buy it to sell on for a handsome profit. ;D
  15. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

You did watch it Ekkekan? Just checking, because the one you refer to is from Oct 20, 2017 vs the new one of Jul 23, 2020, where he incorporates the 2017 video into the new one.

    New one is a very...
  16. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Here is a good summary, I recon, to explain the difference between the system, Axpert and Victron being the core comparisons.

  17. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Yeah, if this is true then 12v is a rather huge issue for most larger systems are 48v.
The picture show panels in series, so that is then confusing ito the max volts to the MPPT.

    On say...
  18. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Cpt does not have rain in summer where the highveld has that quite a bit late afternoon.
And then there is also air pollution, where CoCT has the southeaster to clear some of ours.
    And in summer...
  19. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Cpt has better stats than JHB ... do NOT make me prove that .. for you will owe me a case of Wellington Brandy .. no, just don't.

Cpt MAY have winter rain .. but what you are forgetting, in summer...
  20. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    Here they are: https://www.geyserwise.com/products/pv-water-heating-systems/150l-pv-water-heating-system/

Titbit: Interesting that Cpt is in a high irradiation area.

Ok, IF I have it wrong,...
  21. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Yes, know of them but how, once the geyser/s are heated, do you move the array wires from the Geyserwise MPPT to the inverter/batteries MPPT?

That is where I got stuck and opted for 4 more panels...
  22. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    Few ideas:
    1) Consider a 5kva Multiplus II and a Carlo Gavazzi and don't feed back. Quattro can also be stopped to feed back but is not legal to connect one to the grid because of NRS and SANS...
  23. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

How would one technically do that, that when temp is reached, to move the potential from the panels over to another system i.e. batteries/inverter?
And would that be manually or automatic i.e. more...
  24. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

Question: Ever used batteries to assist to heat the geyser, being technically "off-grid"?

I don't have to as I pass that load straight back to Eskom on the rainy cloudy non-optimal days whilst...
  25. Re: Solar System for Home ( yet another :)

    A perspective.
A geyser takes X amount of time to heat with a 2kw element.
The rest of the time the PV is waste.

When there is insufficient solar, EV tubes win by far ... yet you still need...

  27. Re: Lithium battery built vs ready made branded lifepo4

    Yes, I think I can say I have. Bought 16 x 152amp LifePo4 cells, a BMS and there I went.

Pro's are the higher usage and lifetime.
Con's ... still looking for that as I must have a battery bank...
  28. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

Solis/cheap China grid tied inverter to Axpert comparison is not quite accurate.
Compare Solis Hybrid with a Axpert ... as both require/have batteries.

On top of that, you also have to compare...
  29. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

    Here is a viewpoint/explanation:
Instead of thinking about feeding the grid i.e. your street i.e. the local transformer in your area, rather see it as feeding back ONLY into YOUR own DB's to power...
  30. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

One of the core features of grid tied inverters, is to allow the user the option to not feed back into the grid.

Re: UPS - Where to sell

Something to consider, swapping to lithiums instead of lead acid, for the conversion was...
  33. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

There about yes ... I had it at over R14 ex VAT at one stage.
Bi-directional meter was like +-R12k plus installation of +-R2k.

A rough comparison since we went grid tied:
    Our monthly connection...
  34. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

    Correct. Definitely not legal.

Most of the people I know of with grid-tied solar systems, being on a forum or two, I can say that there are A LOT all over SA that do not send power back to the...
  35. Re: Grid-tied or off-grid. Please consider ...

Yes, I did register over 2 years go in Cpt, to go grid-tied, legally.
Easy as pie, and had the option to feed back, which I declined.

What would you like to know?
