    If you gave it a thorough flush and cleared all/most of the contaminant out, then I'd say it's because the system is very close to optional now, and is as it should be.

    There is a place at Rand Airport (or was, I'm not sure) called USATCO, they sell aircraft structural tooling, so you will find rivet guns, snaps and bucking bars, rivet cutters and all sorts of drool...

    The gunk is normally in the inlet tract, so it won't burn off.
    If it is going to gnaw at you, whip it off and clean it, but be ready for a slog.
    Sometimes a police blanket is easier to clean...;D

    My money is on vapour lock in the pipes to the carbs. If they run past/near the exhausts they will boil off internally and then the next start has to fill the pipes with fuel before the carbs get...

    Yup, I was advised to use Indian Head shellac, both sides and it has been my standard for a long time.
    When I was at an MB dealer, we used a copper based aerosol spray on head gaskets.
