  1. Re: Insurgents apparently seize Mocimboa da Praia? Any confirmation?

I've just received this emailed newsletter from veteran Mozambique observer/journalist, Joseph Hanlon:

Mocimboa da Praia was occupied by insurgents this morning (Monday 23 March) and at 18h00 this...
  2. Re: Insurgents apparently seize Mocimboa da Praia? Any confirmation?

Thanks, I'm sure the reports will come streaming through tomorrow - this is a big development.
  3. Re: Insurgents apparently seize Mocimboa da Praia? Any confirmation?

And this headline on Upstream, which is a reliable source, but I don't have a subscription, so just the headline available:

Islamic insurgents seize town in Mozambique and battle defence forces

  4. Re: Insurgents apparently seize Mocimboa da Praia? Any confirmation?

OK, just picked this up on AIM, the independent Moz news agency:

Mozambique: Terrorists Occupy Mocimboa DA Praia Town

    23 MARCH 2020
Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (Maputo)
    Maputo — The...
  5. Re: Insurgents apparently seize Mocimboa da Praia? Any confirmation?

Thanks, this is a very big escalation - the reports I am getting is that they have actually seized control of the town. The NYT report stops short of saying that.
  6. Insurgents apparently seize Mocimboa da Praia? Any confirmation?

I'm getting unconfirmed reports that Islamic insurgents seized control of Mocimboa da Praia earlier today, attacking from the sea in speed boats and over land. Has anyone closer to sources of...
  7. Re: first confirmed corona cases, travel ban in effect.

The proclamation is pretty explicit about non-essential travel:

Re: Lodges remaining open in Botswana

Good advice - if you can negotiate a long-term rate on Ihaha, or somewhere similar, which is close enough to Kasane to do a supply run from time to time, that is what I would do. Sit tight, relax,...
  9. Re: Our Planed Trip to Namibia / Botswana & Vic Falls April 2020

The border posts may be slow in getting the information, but according to the state of emergency proclamation, Namibia has banned all internal leisure travel - including tourists. Proclamation...
  10. Re: first confirmed corona cases, travel ban in effect.

I fail to follow yours - Namibia has banned ALL internal leisure travel. ALL.

Re: Toyota Hilux - Manual or Automatic

I know very little about Hiluxes, other than owning an early model 30 years ago. But if it is for bush trips, then there isn't really a choice - manual. While it is lovely to drive an automatic most...
  12. Re: Would you help someone in distress? My story….

My story: About 10 years ago, we were camped at Ponta Malongane, and did a morning trip through to Ponta da Ouro to stock up groceries. At the Malongane gate, two of the rangers (in civvy clothes)...
  13. Re: Namibia border closed for leasure travel ??? Help needed

Apologies, I meant Sendelingsdrift - will amend.
  14. Re: Namibia border closed for leasure travel ??? Help needed

Ariamsvlei and Noordoewer are both open for people leaving according to the Namibian proclamation. Closed for entry from South Africa, except for trucks carrying essential goods and returning...
  15. Re: Where can I get the official latest restrictions for Namibia?

The travel ban is internal travel - international flights from low to medium-risk areas still being accepted. Angola is still low risk, as far as I know. Friends have just abandoned a three month...
  16. Re: Namibia border closed for leasure travel ??? Help needed

Yup, Australia is also advising its citizens to get home. Total shutdown has only just begun.
  17. Re: Where can I get the official latest restrictions for Namibia?

AFAIK Windhoek airport is not shut down: here's the proclamation.
  18. Re: Namibia border closed for leasure travel ??? Help needed

Sorry for you guys, but the declaration is clear: all tourist travel inside the country has been banned/suspended. Bummer.

Re: Game / bird viewing binoculars

You're in Cape Town - pop into Orms and try out a few different pairs and see what suits you. I swear by Nikon Monarch 8x42s, bigger magnification than that and you do pick up some shake. In your...
  20. Re: first confirmed corona cases, travel ban in effect.

My advice to Freek and Griet (via SMS) was that if you are going to have to go into lockdown, and self-isolation and social distancing, there is no better place to do it than overlanding through...
  21. Re: May 2020 Botswana safari - will it happen?

I would wait a week before making any decisions. The epidemic is moving very fast, and my layperson's guess is that the WHO is a whisker away from declaring it a pandemic. Then all rules go out the...
  22. Re: May 2020 Botswana safari - will it happen?

Oh please. Don't be ridiculous. The situation is so fluid right now that nobody, let alone a booking agent in Maun or elsewhere, can tell you what the situation will be in the next 24 hours, let...
  23. Re: Where for clutch & brake repair Cape Town?

Thanks guys for the suggestions, West Coast Clutch & Brake took it in this morning and will work on it Monday as well. Very helpful.
  24. Where for clutch & brake repair Cape Town?

Hi, my daughter's Fiat Palio has developed serious clutch and brakes issues. Clutch plate is clearly worn and not engaging easily, and brakes very soft despite being bled professionally. Any...

  26. Re: Driving along the outer edge around South Africa (along the coast and border)

Not quite the same, but in 2011, Kim van Kets did it - running, swimming, paddling and cycling. Over 5,000km - her blog is here (read from the end of page 2 where it starts):...

Re: Lamb Potjie. Please share some ideas.

Uuuum, not quite: umami has been around as a word in the English language for over a century, and many Japanese chefs will say it is the very foundation of Japanese cooking - it's much more subtle...

Re: Lamb Potjie. Please share some ideas.

I haven't read the whole thread, so this may have been mentioned - add a couple or three teaspoons of Marmite, gives a nice umami, subtle edge.

    Re: Ultimate 4x4 camping truck

Looks like a great camping truck, but unfortunately most game parks in Africa will not allow big trucks like that off the main roads, and I wouldn't want to take something that big onto many of the...

Re: Query re possible March 2020 Zambia Trip

    Re: Southern Kafue Camping

There shouldn't be a problem camping at Dumdumwenze - it's a spacious and large area, just chat to the scouts at the gate. It's an easy, albeit quite long, run from there to Ngoma along the Cordon...

Re: Add what you want to my outlander

If it's the newer model with the two jump seats in the boot, consider removing them for extra space. With the second row of seats flat, we can fit up to eight ammo boxes in the rear of our Outlander...
  34. Re: JHB -> Botswana -> Zambia -> Tanzania -> Rwanda

Agreed with WW that you need to factor in delays - I would head to Lake Tanganyika as speedily as possible, and chill there (as you are) but a bit more speedily. Travel hard at first, then ease off...
  35. This is why I love overlanding through Africa

Great article by my old friend, Gavin Hartford - they are four months into an epic overland trip through Africa in their Land Cruiser.
