    Re: TV - 12 volt ?

I've been watching to see if TVs have finally given up on their internal mains power supply and use the usual external PSU (like laptops) but haven't noticed it yet..

    Re: TV - 12 volt ?

Do yourself a favour and check the new TVs that are on the shelves in the shops. It's not going to be long before TVs are the same as every other electronic widget and is supplied by a power adapter...
  3. Re: Good quality portable 12v pure sine wave inverter

Perhaps but maybe not. Often the kVA requirements are exaggerated because that's the only spec they know. (Get one and do a test on your setup..)
What has suddenly dawned on me is that this unit has...

Good point! I've been thinking about the Dutch people and their relationship with their African offspring. I find them convoluted and I must say I still don't know where they are at. I would have...

    Re: Inverters

Ja! I would also like to see how they do this and how loads are prioritised.
The geyser has to be a non priority load. (And I hope the fix is not to simply reduce the wattage of the geyser element...

Re: Coulomb meter or 2 x Ah meters

Also agree that you only need 1 meter. Especially since the losses with a Li-Ion battery (charging/discharging) are so low as opposed to lead acid batteries.
But get yourself a better Ah meter:...

I reckon R150 pm is worth it to have a fallback position when your off grid system has failed for some reason or other..

    Re: Lithium Battery Life Expectancy

The Royal battery has a 5 year lifespan.
There is no way they will last 10 years no matter what you do.
  19. Re: Best solution for car battery maintenance during this time

Heat is a good indicator of a shot battery. If you suspect a fault charge the battery with a meneer of a battery charger (10A+) and see if gets hot.
For large lead acid battery banks a non contact...
  20. Re: Best solution for car battery maintenance during this time

    For sure!
It's the mains battery chargers that can be problematic.
In the bad old days all you needed from a battery charger was to charge your battery.
So you would plug it in and connect the...
  21. Re: Best solution for car battery maintenance during this time

You need to prevent overcharging your battery.
Better to use a smart charger!

Re: Solar geyser backup element usage.

I was under the impression that one's geyser consumes a hellava lot of your electrical power.
So to check this I installed a kWh meter (Elster A100C) in the supply to the geyser.
    After many months...

Re: Solar geyser backup element usage.

OK. So these are grid tie systems. This should be straight forward with a FIT that compares reasonably with the cost of utility power.
However in this part of the world with grid tie systems we...

Re: Solar geyser backup element usage.

I presume this is a grid tie system?
The issue with adding a big load on a time of day basis is that it doesn't allow you to fine tune the control.

Re: Solar geyser backup element usage.

This comment from another thread mentions the wastage of PV power when using timers to control the geyser.
This would be a better way to get more power from your system.
  32. Re: Possible to charge main battery using solar and NL25 dc-dc?

What is the main battery used for? Is it to power the charger if there is no other supply?
If it's not essential then an easy plan is possible..
  33. Re: How often are camping environment batteries thrown away prematurely?

This isn't an issue for camping batteries and intermittent use/charging but temperature is also is a factor.
For continuous charging the warmer the temp the lower the charge voltage should be:

  35. Re: Possible to charge main battery using solar and NL25 dc-dc?

The charger isn't designed to charge the main battery but you might be able to make a plan..
You could swap the batteries to charge both. They also could be switched electrically with a changeover...
