4x4 Trailer recovery in soft sand
Hi All,
When towing a 4x4 trailer through very thick soft sand, it is normally the trailer that got stuck.
After seriously got stuck in deep soft sand on the West Coast, I came up with the following solution to recover my 4x4 Trailer that worked for me.
- To prevent the jockey wheel to sink into the sand when pulling it out of the sand, I place a piece of conveyor belt under the jockey wheel and undo from the vehicle.
- To prevent the jockey wheel pulled off from the conveyor belt by the recovery vehicle, I secure the belt to the front of the trailer frame.

Brilliant idea!
It also uses the KISS concept (Keep it simple stupid).
Re: 4x4 Trailer recovery in soft sand
Not sure if this was done, but many people forget to deflate the trailer tires as well when towing in soft sand.
But it's a great idea if you want to winch your trailer out of the sand.;D

It very much depends on your circumstances. I had my boat on the beach in Sodwana and the sand was very soft. Drop your trailer pressures as much as makes sense to avoid it getting stuck in the first place.
Have you got a compressor? I think this is pretty much essential as you may need your tyres up and down quite a lot depending on the what you are up to.
I also ran into problems with my trailer jackey wheel sinking into the sand when I tried to move from the front tow hitch to the rear. I used a car mat but your conveyor idea is even better.
Also works well for recovery so thanks for sharing your ideas.
Re: 4x4 Trailer recovery in soft sand
Instead of the conveyor belt (which I don't have) I use my recovery spade, pull the winch cable through the handle grip and place the spade blade under the jockey wheel.
The spade acts as a slide over the sand and even when changing direction, it follows the direction of the cable.
No additional equipment needed ;D
