Default LANDCRUISER V8 D4D (diesel) ENGINE CONVERSION


I think many people are looking at the new Landcruiser V8 D4D (diesel) engine and its excellent fuel consumption and power. I for one wish that this engine was available on all Landcruisers (Pick-up and 70/76)

I have a relatively new 70 series but find the engine lacking power specially when towing my caravan. I am thinking of a conversion to the new V8 D4D witk double the KW and torque with a third less fuel consumption. The other alternative is to import a 76 from Australia where the V8 D4D is a standard - but the cost!

Does anyone know of somebody that did such a conversion? What is their opinion?
Is there somebody reputable that can do such a conversion?

It will only be sucsessful if
  • you also get the harnass for the V8 D4d
  • you also get the gearbox used on the V8 D4d

There are some 76's with D4d's available in NAmibia, I know there was one in Gobabis a while ago. Check on LCCSA.

Is this the V8 in the 200 Series? If so, I'd hate to know what you'll pay for that engine. Might be cheaper to get the whole car from Oz...?

I was informed by a Toyota rep that the V8 from the 200 would be available for the LC70 this year sometime. He said June, but that's probably unlikely.

Never owned a cruiser, but know the feeling of being bitten by a V8 bug.

If you really want to hammer it the V8 TD would probably be better. If however you want more power towing, and slight better economy, why not invest in a turbo?

LCCSA website has lots of info regarding fitment of a 0.4 bar turbo and intercooler to that 4.2 diesel. Various kits available

Also lots of mixed feelings regarding the conversion since the engine was not designed for boosting, but there are enough success stories out there to at least consider it.

Just fit an exhaust gas temperature meter if you do...

We have a LC 200 on the mine that did an engine at about 30000km... not sure why. Blooming expensive to replace.

Turbo and intercooler should significantly increase the power of the 4.2l and still be reliable.

Would be interesting to know. They seemed pretty much bullet proof in the T2 class Dakar this year.

That might be used. A V10 motor was quoted, 1 yrs ago, at R462k.

i also own a lc 4.2 and im looking if i can just import the engine, gear box and diffs from australia but the problem is how do i find out where in australia cam i import the engine

Why did you buy the vehicle if you are not happy with the power? I own the 4.2 p/u and am as happy as can be and won't touch it. Any aftermarket turbo just screw the reliability and the V8 is a high tech electronically controlled commonrail diesel which I don't want. The simple mechanical 4.2 is perfect for my African trips. The whole world is full of high tech, high performance tupperware 4x4's and now people want one of the last real simple vehicles to also become so complicated that it can only be fixed in a computerised workshop. Thrown in a 350 V8 Chev if you want real power at an affordable cost with good reliabilty.

d4d v8 - sounds great - i love the sound of a v8 ( and how i miss my old range rover classic. )
but to get back to the issue of conversion - NO NO, NO - so few conversions are worth the money spend.
i have a 1992 land cruiser (80) 4.2 non turbo diesel ( as standard - per toyota sa )
why change a good thing into something that might be better or worse. ?
it's a gamble .
my old RR classic ( her name was Olivia)
now i did my homework on trying to do an engine conversion on OLIVIA ( 5.5km per liter makes one think real hard about it), and at best i can say = if ever i 'll try such a thing - it will be with gearbox and engine , and never just the engine ,
and then there is the diff ratio's to take in consideration - and here i get lost - because i know nothing about diff ratios etc.
ELECTRONICS - is a wonnderfull aid in fuel consumption - but my own experience with my jeep 2.8 crd - when things go wrong you wish you were not on holiday.
just my 5cents worth.

To come back to this, N1 4x4 does a conversion on the 70 series to the D4D 4500 V8. Not my cup of tea as I hate conversions but I guess they would do a proper job at obviously a proper cost.

Rather go with a 1HDFT conversion. A lot less invasive, with just as much power.
