Default Extra electric fans

This has been a hot topic recently and decided today that I need some extra cooling. The XJTd has a viscous fan (recently replaced) aswell as an electric fan. They both just don't cut it especially in the dunes. After hitting a slope and getting bogged and maybe abit of grinding with the aircon on she will suddenly overheat.

Even without the aircon on it will run hot. So decided I need to nip it in the butt and install extra cooling fans. Not much room for any other improvement, pretty tight in there.

Infront of the radiator there is a space 5cm deep x 80cm long x 25cm high. I am thinking of getting 3 20cm fans and hooking them up to the auxillary fan circut, so they come on with the main electric fan.

Where can I source these fans? Any recomendations? And will I get slimline fans that will fit in the 5cm deep gap?

Not sure of the dimensions, but Autozone has quite a range available.

I put 2 x Toyota RunX fans in my LC and they keep a 4,2TD motor cool. Barely run.

Only problem is that they are about 30mm thick.

PS. Don't use the Autozone ones. They die quickly and they are not as effective.

Put 4 of them on the KZ Prado and they didn't do the job. But then nothing helps for the bloody KZ.

The RunX fans cost me R250 each.

PS. I also fitted a thermostat and a 3 way switch.

1. Fan is auto. Comes on at 85degC and off at 80degC
2. Off. Water crossings and the likes.
3. On. Permanent on. Specifically for when the aircon is on.

Biggles, I found when offroading the auxilliary fan was coming on the whole time and in very hot seriously heavy going it just didn't ever switch off. Had the radiators flushed first and that made a huge improvement, but alas not a total cure. Still found the heat gauge hovering in an unhappy zone at times.

I then fitted two 10" fans that I got from our local Autozone (realise I stay in the countryside and used what was available). I chose not to have it come on with the auxilliary electric fan, but rather fitted them with a manual switch through a relay.

Works wonderful for serious heavy offroad work in our very hot climate.

However, Iwouldn't totally replace the fan with an electric unit.

Biggles, 25cm is 10" - and I'm sure those are the ones I fitted to my XJ a few years ago. They can fit. I'll see if I can take some photo's over the weekend and post it. Unfortunately I didn't take pics when it was dismantled, aned my spotlight wires now go through the grill.

Biggels.
The smallest you can go is a 8" fan(20cm).
Look in the "Speed & Sound" mag.
There are places that adverise 8" fans.
Also have a loo at places that sells VW Beetle spares.
They ussually sell fans for the oil coolers that are about 8" diameter.

Look at installing an oil cooler as a lot of heat dissipation is through the oil
