Default Namakwa 4x4, Kgalagadi. Richtersveld

Hi everyone
I am considering a trip to namakwa 4x4, Kgalagaldi or Richtersveld during December / January. Am I mad or will the heat be bearable?

Any comments please

You are mad. Mind you, perhaps you do have an air conditioned tent with auto bug relellant features, and scorpion proof sandals, because the weather is not boot-friendly, including a day-time slave waving a fan.

Seriously, there are weather-friendlier places to spend that part of the season.

Ja nee, rather go somewhere else. We did the Namakwa 4x4 onto Richtersveld in July 2009. It was an average of 30 degress in the park in the middle of winter. The locals talk about up to 50 deg in Jan/Feb

You're not mad. If it pours with rain you will have the best time of your life - there is nothing better than the Kalahari when it's wet and green. The heat can be a killer, but if you work around it, you'll see a side of that part of the world that is totally different. Richtersveld will be fiery hot, but if you have a good shade tree and good awnings, and spend the hottest part of the day drifting in the river, hakuna matata.

Get up an hour or two before dawn, be back in camp by 10am, and only venture out again after 4pm, bearing in mind that it only gets full dark after 9pm.

We always carry a spray bottle for each person (those ones you buy at the nursery for spraying poison or watering pot plants). Fill them with water, and keep spraying yourself - works better than air con, which just makes you sick.

If you use Tony's idea with regards to the spray bottle just make sure you buy them new. Don't take one from home that you last used with weed poison in it. You then might just wipe yourself out.
