Default Problem with Nuvi 360 and map

Hi.
I have a Nuvi 360 and Southern Africa streetmaps V1.5 Topo & Rec.
Recently i received coordinates to a farm to attend 4X4 training. I punched in the coordinates on my gps and after hours of driving, i realised the wonderful contraption had taken me WAY off course.

When i eventually found the farm (hours later) i did my course which was wonderful (Nigel from Williamsburg Farm was fantastic). On the way out of the farm two days later i fiddled endlessly with my unit to get it to pick up the "other road" on which i was travelling but it would not. Loads of fiddling and cursing later i got it to pick up the "other road" on which i was traveling (dirt road) and it plotted my course back home.
Now i want to return to the farm and it plots some ridiculous course directly through a set of mountains (as the crow flies course) once it nears the farm. All the national roads are fine etc and other major roads, but once it nears dirt roads it reckons bugger this and tells me to grow wings and fly.

Anyone out there got some good advice for me, throw it all away and buy a map or what do i do?

Cheers

Jeepy, first do a firmware update on the GPS unit. Connect it to your laptop/PC via USB and then run the WebUpdater program from the Garmin folder.

If you don't have it, go to the Garmin website and click on Support (I think), and look around until you download the webupdater.

Then do an update of your maps within Mapsource. Finally re-send all your maps to your GPS units.

This should do the trick, if not log an issue with Garmin

Unhappy Grrr

Thanks chaps.

I got hold of Avnic trading today and this is what one of the techs said, after doing the firmware update etc etc, which still did not work...he told me that the nuvi 360 is not really for 4X4'ing and that it wont pick up the dirt roads unless i am close to them.........
Even when i was ON then recently it would not pick them up until a lot of fiddling later it did. Then i fiddled a bit more and switched the unit off after arriving at home and low and behold it is giving the finger again when i tell it to go to certain coordinates, no matter what the coords are (if there are dirt roads involved). It gets me close (a few kilometres) and then it decides oh what the hell, turn here through this huge mountain and just drive straight.....
The tech told me i should look at a more compatible unit for dirt roads etc.
This sounds like nonsense to me, as how would another unit be better at picking up a road than another?
Any suggestions here and has anyone else had the same problem with a nuvi 360?
If i should go for another unit, which one do i go for, and is anyone interested in buying mine (around 2 months old)?

Cheers

I'll put my head on the block and say there's bugger-all wrong with your GPS or the maps, and you'll find your problem (which is not a problem) will happen with whatever GPS you use.

Remember not all dirtroads on SA Streetmaps V1.5 are autoroutable. The fact that your GPS draws a line through the mountains (and you're looking at "other roads" confirms for me that the road you are wanting to use is not autoroutable. So what the GPS does is get you to an autoroutable point nearest the co-ordinates you had input, and then draws a line direct from there to your destination.

Look at the last picture on this thread and you'll see what I mean.

If you post the co-ordinates here we can look but I'm betting this is the case.

Please remember a GPS is not failsafe, and you really need to understand how your GPS and the maps work (and how they are developed)

Hi SimonB

Thank you so much clarifying a few things for me.
Now i am hoping you can help me one or two steps further.
  1. What to do now, buy another unit?
  2. If so which one, Quest, Quest II, Quest SA or GPSMAP276C ?
  3. Remember, i already have SA streetmaps V1.5 T&R on my nuvi360, which i can deregister and transfer to new unit right?..?..? (am awaiting feedback from Avnic re this...).
  4. What is a good price to sell my nuvi 360 for? It has external antennae along with all the goodies and is about a month and a half old, pretty much brandnew as i have used it twice.
I want something that will do what the nuvi does on road, ie autoroutable to most desitnations in SA and then will auto-route the "other roads", and i want the 'breadcrumb feature' which will cover me for when there simply are no roads indicated on the map, so i cant get lost.

I made a mistake by purchasing the nuvi, i do not wish to make another.
Units are pretty cheap (at least a LOT cheaper than here) and i am an old Ebay shopper and have yet to experience bad service.

Your help will be most appreciated.

Regards

Jeepy

Did you read my previous post? There is nothing wrong with your GPS or the map sets. Buying a Quest, 276 or whatever will not resolve your issues (except give you a tracklog)

Theoretically you could but then you'd have to give away your GPS. No-one will buy a Nuvi without a mapset.

Again, it's not the GPS but the maps, and you're searching for a GPS utopia that simply doesn't exist. No mapsets are perfect, there will always be gaps, missing roads etc etc, which is why people make hobbies (or a living) out of developing maps. I believe you think that they drive every single road in the country to make these maps. This is simply not true... most of them are done from topo maps or aerial photos and the GPS coordinates are then confirmed at a later stage. That takes time and maps will never be truly up to date.

Well, maybe you should have researched a little better but the only thing the nuvi doesn't have that you want is the breadcrumb feature. I think you're tossing your money away, just to buuy a new GPS to find it won't give you a lot more than what you have....
