Hi All

I currently have a Disco 4 and am looking at the new diesel v6 Touareg. Everyone is saying its a great car but why does the Discovery out sell it 3 times?

You cannot really put them in the same class, disco spit , spit, is bigger inside , the third row of seats best in class , still a real off road car where the Touareg is An suv. Drove both in the dunes and on highway and even though not a landie fan between those two the landie does off road just so much better and on road almost as good as the Touareg if not as well .

Any reason for selling it so soon, or is this to fill up the garage .

Touareg, but im just BIASED

Both great vehicles, but onroad dynamics, that flawless V6 TDI, along with a twin clutch 8 speed box. The touareg might not be as capable as the disco offroad, but they are not useless by any means!

The question is, demands......?

I had the Disco a year and did not even drive on a gravel road. I only need the size for my family.

I would go for the Touareg then! I have one, all the bells and whistles. Very light on juice, and just a effortless pleasure to drive. On road it drives like a car!

Seeing that you only drive a car for a year, what have you got to loose
Go and test drive the Touareg and I promise you, you will sign on the dotted line immediately
Let us know the outcome

V8 diesel or petrol?
I nearly went for a V8 diesel, i just could not justify the price difference. For roughly the same price as a "standard" V8 diesel i got a brand new-

White touareg with : Panoramic sunroof, SAT NAV, Heated seats, roof racks, elec towbar, elec boot lid, electric seats, PDC, built in hard-drive and media center, adaptive cruise control etc

If you need a very large interior the Disco wins easily. Driving dynamics and economy - Touareg is the one.

I would agree a standard Disco 4 is better off road than a standard new Touareg now. Throw in the terrain tech package on the Treg, and it gets very close again with the Disco having a slight edge. On the road the Treg is the winner.

Check out this for some for inspiration http://www.touareg-russtralia.com/

Swambo has a 2011 V6 TDI with terrain tech etc. She took it on a ladies only 4x4 course given by the 4x4 club at Base 4 while a mate of hers was also there with a V6 Disco 4. The Treg did eveything just as well as the Disco other than ground clearance was not as good. This is strange since it has air suspension and, from memory, ground clearance in off-road height should be as good as the Disco. Sometime I will put it on maximum height in the driveway and see just what clearance we are actually getting and compare to specification.
Problem could have been more with approach angle than underbody scraping.
The next Disco version is going to be around 300/400kg lighter than the current model and should be quite an awesome machine off AND on road.
Marketing is a big issue for the relatively poor sales and VW are not pushing the 4x4 and off road ability (terrain tech now an option rather than standard fitment). Lots of people who are generally well informed on 4x4 matters know very little about the Treg's ability off the tar. The instructor at the ladies day told them that the main thing he learnt while instructing them was just how good the Touareg was in off road mode. He had absolutly no idea how capable they really are.
Maybe VW should start an advertising campaign along the lines of 4x4-ing's best kept secret......??
