I'm in Louterwater in the Langkloof. Stuck on the farm, have had more than 250mm rain and the bridge is washed away. The Langkloof is getting flooded once again. Luckily we have enough wood, food and brandy
Friends of ours visiting for the weekend will have a bit longer stay than planned.

One of my mates is in Keurbooms river chalet area.
He said the water is a meter deep at the exit ??
So he will call later or in the morning if we need to pull him out.
I wonder how bad his situation will get later tonight if you say Langkloof area is coming down.
He did say the wind was dropping about 20 mins ago. So we should see a wind drop at 10pm or so.

It's been absolutely pouring since this morning and still going strong with strong winds from about 15.00. I think we averaged almost an inch rain an hour from about 14.00.

Keurbooms again! They seem to get the full brunt of the storms every time we have these huge cold fronts rolling in.

Coming down in buckets right now in Bluewater Bay.

I'm must still go out tonight to fetch my mom from the bus depot at Greenacres....hope the roads are ok then.

The bus was suppose to be here at 9:30 this morning after leaving at 11:00 last night and waiting quite a few hours this morning due to road closures. Almost 24 hours in a bus, that's not a lot of fun.

Everything is quiet now again, but there seems to be more rain coming according to Windguru, tomorrow 2-5pm, if the amount falls that we had earlier there is going to be chaos.

[QUOTE=imgreg;1217590]Glad i don't live in Cape St Francis anymore.
Lost 1/4 of my roof about 2 years ago.

Sounds familiar, happened to me a couple of times already. They call PE the windy city, it's a pleasure there compared to St F!!!

That thought crossed my mind last night reading about the expected rain.
Here you are confirming my suspicions. That existing bridge that just washed was a temporary make-do. Here we are a year later...repeat performance.

We pay some of the highest rates and taxes in the country. We also used to have one of the richest municipalities in the country. Sadly, bad management and misappropriation of funds and here we sit......no money to repair essential services. EISH!!

If the Lankloof rain is coming your way, then it is not finished. We had a bit of a break during the night and this morning, but has started again. Already had another inch of rain since late morning, bringing the total since Friday night to 14 inches.

This is what my connection to civilization looked like this morning.

I'm between 2 rivers and a mountain at the back, basically an island between the 2 rivers. There are 3 bridges of the island. Two of these are currently damaged to such an extent that they cannot be used. The third one is still usable going through a neighboring farm. This bridge is very sturdy, the problem is the soil surrounding the bridge which is getting washed away by the water.

Getting to the third one means going through orchards and using roads normally reserved for tractors. This is where the fun starts. The soil is so saturated and soft that it is now only drivable in 4x4. The last time I drove it this morning before it started raining heavily again, it was already becoming muddy and slippery. If you slide of the "hard" part you'll be on your chassis. Currently I'm reserving this route for absolute necessities. Problem is, tomorrow is a work day, that is the only way on to the farm at the moment and if a tractor has gone over it a couple of times, even the tractor will get stuck.

Tomorrow is going to be an eventfull day

Yes Tony. I'm at Louterwater. Currently there is a lot of farms cut of by rivers and I think most of the Kouga area. There was a stage where the whole town of Krakeel was isolated by water.

At the moment I haven't heard of any dam walls breaking but there is a real danger for this to happen if the rain doesn't stop soon.

There is for example a whole string of dams between Louterwater and Krakeel and they are overflowing heavely. If one of them breaks, all the dams downstream will most likely also break, probably taking the R62 at Krakeel with it.

Stopped raining. Standing at 371mm. Also just heard that the school will also be closed tomorrow as most teachers and learners are stuck at home. Being a farming community most teachers and students are from farms and isolated areas throughout the Langkloof.

Those are the communities that really suffer under these weather conditions

Luckily I was not told the whole truth about the Sandriver Bridge. The bridge was not washed away but only closed for traffic as a precaution. opened up for trafffic this morning again.
But none the less it is still pathetic that the bridge is not being rebuild as it sould be.

And possible more coming. This was issued today.

Quote:
Subject:
JOINT OPERATIONS CENTRE TO BE ESTABLISHED AS HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED

Dear Colleagues

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be establishing a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) from 3pm this afternoon following a warning by the South African Weather Service of persistent rain this afternoon and tomorrow.

Even though approximately 60mm of rain is expected today and tomorrow, the JOC - consisting of Disaster Management, Fire and Emergency, South African Police Services (SAPS), Infrastructure and Engineering, Human Settlements and Communications - will be on alert. Due to saturated soil conditions even low rainfall could lead to flash floods.

Recent flash floods resulted in the distribution of thousands of blankets, mattresses and other relief supplies. We would therefore like to appeal to residents in lower lying areas and areas prone to flooding to keep these supplies dry for use if the need arise to relocate them to Community Halls. This will also enable the municipality to prioritize individuals or families who are in desperate need of help.

Motorists are requested to keep safe following distances and adhere to the rules of the road as treacherous conditions could lead to an increase in accidents.

Like Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on facebook and follow us on twitter @NMBmunicipality.

Residents can contact 0800 20 50 50 for assistance and in life threatening situations please contact 041 585 1555.

Thank you.

I was behind the airport today and that whole area all the way through to Willows is saturated, water puddles everywhere. Sections of the road around the back runway and even the road in front of Willows is under water.
