Default Defender Speedo Unit

Hi All,
The LCD mileage (kilometerage?) display on my 1998 Defender 90 2.8i has been flickering on & off for a while, but has now given up the ghost. Having been told that the cause is likely to be dirty contacts on the LCD screen I took out the speedo, but as far as I can make out it is a sealed unit, so I can't get to the screen without cutting the casing.
Am I missing something?
Not keen to cut without having located a spare speedo in case, & if I have a spare speedo there's not much point in cutting!!

Thanks
Grahame

Mine does the same - it is caused by rainy weather. I first thought it was because I drove with the flaps open when it rained, but it now happened when my Landy was parked in the garage (while it rained). The good news is that it fixes itsself after a week or so of dry weather. Maybe wait a little before cutting the thing open.

Hi Albert,
Thanks for the reply but unfortunately wet weather doesn't seem to be the cause - last sign of life was about 3 or 4 months ago, and there's been no rain down here (Western Cape) for the last month or 2. A good run on rough roads used to get it working, (which seems to gel with the poor/dirty contact theory), but thats no longer working!
Cheers
grahame

Try spraying some electrical spray onto the plug at the back of the speedo, if this doesn't work you can strip the speedo to see if the flex cable is still properly attached,

Pleasure, before you open your speedo, try the electrical spray does wonders, it is fairly dusty at the back on the dials.

I'm not sure. I unplugged the white electrical connector at the back and sprayed it. I can't recall now what else was at the back of the speedo unit.

If everything else fails try Combined Electronic Services, 6 Privet Street, Plattekloof 021 930 3549/87. Take the Landy to them and talk to Henry - he fixed mine. He does work for BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc and know what he's doing.

Hi, i would just like to know if anyone managed to sort out the speedo problem? I also own a '98 D90 2.8i and my clock was replaced by the previous owner @ 130 000 and it shows only 29 000 on the new one....does anybody know how to get the lcd to reflect the actual mileage?

Drive 100 000km to fix your problem

I managed to open my speedo quite easily and cleaned the ribbon connector with spiritus. Be careful if you are considering this - the conductive strips on the ribbon dissolve quite easily. I sealed the back of the speedo with a plastic baggie. It helped but is not 100% My next step will be to put a few silica gel packets (the stuff inside pill containers) inside the plastic to keep the air dry

Well I eventually got round to spraying the connectors on the back of the speedo - didn't help, so removed & opened speedo.
When I saw the conductive strip I decided not to touch it if at all posible - far too delicate for fingers more used to 15cm & larger spanners!!
Did give it a good spray before closing up, but that didn't help either.
Looks like I'll be paying Combined Electronic Services a visit on the next visit to Cape Town.

Opening the speedo is much harder than removing the ribbon, just take a small little flat screwdriver and pop the top of the connector on the pc board open. The ribbon then slides out easily. This is really easy, if you have to use force it means you are doing it wrong.
