Default Standard trailer wiring diagram (colour coded)

This diagram is always handy to have around . Laminate it and stick it onto the trailer and glove compartment of your towing vehicle. I Always bridge no 6+7

Cherokee

One very important piece of info missing from your diagram - Are you looking at the plug from the front or the rear? The male or the female?

Talking from experience

This is a wiring diagram for a 12n, 7 pin standard trailer socket.

This is the view from the rear as you look at the terminals to wire the plug or socket. In all cases the terminals will be numbered.

I have seen case where te terminals are not numbered - My current luggage trailer has been "rewired" a number of times by "friends" borrowing it and then returning it modified

No numbers on the terminals.

I see Pin 2 is for a fog light. Why would no-one evr have bothered to wire a reverse light in?

Pin 2 is for auxiliary (12V+) supply for stuff that needs 12V in the trailer.

Theoretically you should be able to charge a battery or run a fridge off it in the trailer/caravan, but these pins seldom gets wired or if they are wired the wires are to thin and the voltage drop too much and the current flow too restricted. I wired a 4 mm conductor in my folks' bakkie straight from the battery to supply power to the caravan, via a proper fuse off-course. You can also add a relay to switch it on/off together with the car's ignition.

The diagrams are all for the trailers. Does the same colour wires go on the female (car) side of the plug? I need to refit my tow bar and plug for the weekend.

No the guys use any colour they like when wiring a car. You will have to get a test lamp to figure out what wire goes where.
