Unhappy Mitsubishi:Triton Wading Depth is confidential WTH


Since I started 4x4ing at the beginning of this year I have been trying unsuccessfully to find out what the Triton's wading depth is.
I have had some vague answers on this forum but nothing concrete. I have spoken to the sales staff, Branch manager, Service Manager and workshop manager at Mitsubishi Tygervalley. I have phoned the Mistusbishi/Daimler customer care number number three times and have been promised that someone will get back to me, put through to "the expert" who could not help and been told it is at running board height, top of the tyres, top of the wheel arch.

Last month the Mitsubishi Explorer Club mag had a fantastic article discussing the Pajero wading depth in detail. I have contacted the sales staff at Tygervalley and the editor of the Club Magazine requesting that information on the Triton. Eventually I was referred to this person and I got this reply just now.

Hi Doug

The wading depth on the Triton is not available from MMC. We have requested this some time ago for Charl and they advised us that the information is confidential and it will not be made available to distributors of Mitsubishi products.

Maybe Miss Salim, or who ever it was that was harvesting email addresses off this site might make use of these.

I know one or two things about wading depths, and my advice to you is to find out yourself.

Here is how I would do it:

  1. Drive slowly, with no bow wave, into, and out of, a water body of known depth, say 250mm.
  2. Repeat, but increase water depth by 50mm.
  3. Repeat step 2 until car stalls.
  4. Get recovered, rebuild engine, dry interior, and publish the second last result you obtained on the forum.
And then contact Mitsubishi and provide them with your top secret information.

my advice to you - building on what Andrew said is:

Find a dam (a deep one)
slowly edge the triton forward, slowly, slowly
now proceed till it drowns
When Mits asks how deep you went say you do not know - but can they tell you what the depth is under which they will still pay out under warrantee - should give us a general idea. think should be around 10mm or something like that



ag no man - this must surely be someone who is not suited to answer technical questions. Maybe they thought by wading depth you wanted the blueprints of the design - maybe they read you as tritontata and not tritontitan - its confusing man

I would look for differential breather pipes and see how high they go

Also water should not reach alternator, fan belts and blades

My guess that limit is when your whole wheel is submerged in the water

When water reaches your air intake then engine will self-destruct

Well, un-scientifically, the Triton's air intake for the motor is in the same position and the same height off the ground(roughly) as the Pajero. So if you do not take diff breathers into account, it should be the same as the Pajero.

See images attached. I can not see any snorkels on these vehicles and the water is pretty deep.

Manufacturers in general use the center of the mag wheel as a safe depth for water but I am sure the top of the tyre should be safe.

This is to deep!!!!I had to change all the gearbox and diff oils after this excursion.

You guy's can sponsor all the oils, and we can do some testing

Tritontitan,
Open the bonnet,check where the intake of the air filter is.Take something like a measure of bamboo,reed,etc.and mark it at a position below the level of the intake,to your liking.When next you come to a river crossing,wade through using the stick as measure to determine the feasability of crossing at that point.
The air intake is the most important point to be protected.
Regarding diff.breathers,most vehicles are equipped with elevated rear ones only.

i found the correct wading depth for the ford ranger by accident and it cost me R15 000 for a second hand diff (fitted).
the front diff has independent suspension with a fixed centre portion and half shafts that slide in and out of the housing similar to the half shafts on a front wheel drive car. my logic told me wading depth should be such that as long as i keep the water out of the cab, i'll be ok.

surprise, surprise. 2 months later the diff broke. when i stripped it, i found that about half of the content of the diff casing was water. when stripping further i found that everything inside, including the bearings had rusted to bits. my logic tells me that even with breather pipes correctly fitted and all ok, water can enter the diff i presume past the seals. the seals are designed to keep oil in, not specifically water out.

obviously when checking the diff oil periodically, i would remove the filler plug, add some oil till it runs out but everytime all looked ok. the problem also is that the diff is not fitted with a drain plug at the bottom so routine oil changes are not possible. oil floats on water so i would not have known about the water unless i had made a plan to suck or syphon it out somehow.

if ever i bought a 4x4 without a drain plug on a diff, i will definately have one fitted.

Hi all.

Many thanks for all the valuable comments and yes I enjoyed the humour too.
I already have a Safari snorkel, and extended the rear diff breather this weekend to high in the engine bay.

Some one (Barto or Jacques) has said the front diff breathers already end high in the engine bay.

Does anyone know about other breathers? Transfer case? Gearbox? Fuel tank?
