Default Shocks

Fellow Mahindra fans.

My 2.6 Td SUV needs new shocks. What would you recommend? Approximate price? For front and rear.

Talking Shocks

It all depends on what your needs are and how far you are prepared to stretch your budget. I have just fitted Monroe Gas Magnums to my Defender, R425 each from Midas, am very satisfied.

Thanks Wise One

I suspected prices to be in the region of R500. I do quite a lot of driving on some bad gravel roads, also heard from other guys that the Monroe's are quite good! Apparently I should stay clear of Gabriels.

Hi Duka,

I replaced my front shocks with Monroe original gas adjust shocks and the rears with Monroe gas magnums. The gas magnums are a bit thicker than the OEM ones, I had to take of a mm or 2 on the shock mounts. I am very happy with them. +- R400 each.

Hi Scorpio Turbo

Do you perhaps know the part numbers for the Monroe front and rear shocks.
I replace shocks some time ago and the Tyre dealers charge me a lot- and that for gas Gabriels!

Hi Frans,

I'll have to find the invoice to check the part numbers. I'll have to get back to you.

Hey Duka,

Presently Monroe only has the pickup shocks in stock. I spoke to the sales office yesterday and the shipment for the suv is on its way. Stock should be available from mid November 2010. part nr R1663 and R1664

Default Monroe Shocks SUV 2.6TD

Hey Duka,
I fittled MONROES last month (Sept) just before I went up to the Richtersveld. I fitted the standard Monroe Original Gas Shocks to the FRONT only. (one of the old ones was leaking at 79,500km). The Part Number was R2721 and it is a very easy quick fit of same. Literally only takes a few minutes. I can honestly say, I did in fact notice a nice difference for the couple of days before I set off...much better handling through corners. We bounced many a rut and bump enroute to the Richtersveld on the back roads (very corrugated) and then drove around there for some 8 days. Very Happy with same. I got mine through a 4x4 outlet here called G-Tech who also made my steel sump and front diff guard. Can also say I don't notice any difference now...but then one gets used to the improvement. Next will have to think about the rears. Cheers.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the info.
Was in Thabazimbi for work and saw that my tires was really worn as well. Fitted 4 brand new tires 245/70 R16 and then the shocks.... There was no shocks available in Thabazimbi for the duration that I was there, but luckely a very nice Chap at Autozone put in a lot of effort and got hold of 2 Monroe heavy duty gas shocks for the front and 2 Gabriel Safari gas shocks for the rear. Especially the Gabriels were much thicker and biefier than the original Monroes fitted. All went well with the fitment of the tires and the shocks and it feels like I am driving a brand new vehicle! The shocks especially made a huge difference!

What is the difference between the Monroe Gas Magnum/Adventure and Old Man Emu shocks? Or is it all just the same thing?

The price...Just kiding, the OME shocks are probably much higher quality and can take a bigger beating. Can the OME shocks not also be refurbished?

Even on the Thar? My shocks seems to be very dicey.

I took my shocks out over the weekend, just to inspect. The rear bushes show serious wear, but both front and rear shocks are very, very weak.. not very impressed!!

Hi Guys,

Yup, been looking at my Thar, those shocks of mine must have gone to heaven. If all goes to plan next year March I will bring back some decent off-road shock for my Thar from overseas. Till then normal replacements would need to do.

I have another question, which is partly related. The torsion bar in the front suspicion, can that be replaced by shocks and springs or would it not be viable.

Only the 4x2 can have coil springs in the front. On the 4x4 the drive-shafts runs were the coils should go. Coil over shocks might work if there is enough space, but their coils will only assist the torsion bar, not replace it.

I had Camils on my Bolero, yes they assist the torsion bars but rubbish damping shocks, not much better than the std pathetic shocks.

Monroes 4X4 Gas Manguns or Gabriel Safari HDP Gas the back?

I had Camils in my Bolero, yes it does help to lift the front suspension and release tension on the torsion bars, but the shocks damping capabilities is poor, does not get close to TJM's or any good off road shock.
