HMMWVs (Humvees) in S.A.
Hi All,
I wish to buy a stock ex-military Humvee. Buying it in the U.S. and shipping it to S.A will be expensive.
Did the SADF ever use Humvees? Are there any Humvees in S.A. in civilain hands? In the early 90's UNITA in Angola had them in small numbers during its war with the government forces. Does anyone know what happned to the ones that survivied the war?
Thanks for any feed-back.
Cheers!

Found this list of countries that used Humvee's. I doubt you'll find any in South Africa. As far as I'm aware they weren't used by SADF at all. The terrain in most of Southern and Central Africa does not really suit the Humvee so if there are any they would be few and far between.
In addition to the United States, the HMMWV is used by the following countries: Afghanistan - 4,150 new M1152 and M1151 versions by the Afghan National Army.
Albania - 20 vehicles
Algeria - 200+ vehicles
Argentina - EA: 34 vehicles; FAA: 6; Gendarmeria: approx. 12 vehicles and IMARA: 140 vehicles
Bosnia and Herzegovina - ordered a small number of vehicles for de-mining units stationed in Iraq) - 27
Bulgaria - 52 vehicles, 50 are the up-armored M1114 variant, and two are ambulances.[32]
Chad
Chile - Army 200+ vehicles, Marines 20+ vehicles
People's Republic of China - see PRC HMMWVs
Colombia - 400+ vehicles
Croatia - 42 units used in Afghanistan UN mission
Czech Republic - Mainly 601st Special Forces Group[33]
Denmark - 100+ vehicles, 30 of which are armed with TOW
Dominican Republic
El Salvador 20
Ecuador - approx. 30 vehicles in the Ecuadorian marines
Egypt - 3890+
Georgia - 10
Greece - 500+ vehicles built by ELBO in Greece under license from AM General)
Hungary - 27 vehicles for units in Afghanistan
Iraq - 3961+ vehicles. Used by the New Iraqi Army, Iraqi Security Forces and Kurdish Peshmerga.
Israel - 2000+ vehicles, formerly assembled by AIL from knockdown kits.
Latvia
Lebanon - 472 vehicles,[34][35] 200 more to be delivered in 2009.[34]
Lithuania - about 200 vehicles bought from USA
Luxembourg - 43 vehicles
Republic of Macedonia - 56 vehicles
Mexico
Morocco
Panama - 7 vehicles
Oman
Philippines - 300 vehicles
Poland - 217 vehicles
Portugal
Republic of China (Taiwan)
Romania - approx. 100 vehicles
Russia - (8 vehicles were seized by Russian forces during 2008 South Ossetia War, Occupation of Poti)
Saudi Arabia
Serbia - 50 specially upgraded vehicles - used by PTJ (Counter-terrorist Unit)
Slovakia
Slovenia - 30 vehicles
Spain - 150+ vehicles only by the Infanteria de Marina; Spanish Police of the Basque Region 20 BBT (Berrozi Berezi Taldea); the Army uses the URO VAMTAC in that role)
Thailand
Turkey - under license by MKEK
Ukraine - 10 vehicles, all donated by the United States to the Polish–Ukrainian Peace Force Battalion (UKRPOLBAT)
United Arab Emirates
Venezuela (M1097A1)
Yemen
Zimbabwe (EQ2050)

I remember we had struggles when trying to import our BMW into RSA due to the "left hand driven" status - the local government will not allow further imports of non right hand driven vehicles into RSA. That's at least my latest information.
I don't know if both versions available, but from the list above I see only 4 options to import....China, Taiwan, Thailand and Zimbabwe - if really right hand drive versions.

Correct, I wanted to take the Range Rover back to SA but the restriction on left hand drive imports has pretty much ruled out that option.

That is the one Spike was talking about.
Belonged to Safari Centre, and dont think it was a H2.
Pretty sure it was the original.

This one stopped at Stockman's shop a few years ago when it passed through PE.
It makes it's 37" tyres look small.
It felt very cramped on the inside with it's bucket seats and all the equipment these guys mounted on the dash and centre console.

Is it just because this thing is the size of a small village, or does that steering wheel look a bit small and out of place?

Here's an option: get a RHD Zim Hummvee, but leave it registered as a Zim vehicle. You'll need to have a copy of the reg documentation, as well as permission from the "owner" in Zim to allow you to drive it in SA, and then you'll have to make at least one trip a year to Zim so that the polizei can see the stamp in your passport (AFAIK, this is the only loophole to the import rules, and I know people that have bought cheap Jap imports in Botswana and then driven them in SA on a Bots license).
BUT I MIGHT BE WRONG, this is all hearsay....

I worked on a TV series here where we imported 15 Humvee's from the U.S unfortunatly they could only come over on a temparary import permit for two reasons, firstly the left hand drive thing, we cannot import left hand drive vehicles any more (unless you do not register them for road, this would explain the game park scenario) this is strictly enforced. Secondly there is an export ban on any military spec vehicle from the U.S. which came into effect a few years ago. You may get a civilian H1 out but you would have to convert it to right hand drive to be able to use it on the road. there are some available outside of the U.S. to average price is around $50,000 USD for a basic one that has seen a few wars!

I know someone with a US LHD H2 imported from Angola, still on Angolan plates and his vehicle is for all intents and purposes illegal. His permits have expired. A lot of schlep for what is (IMHO) not such a great car. He loves it though, and will probably never sell it.
Each to his own.

HMMWVs in S.A.
Thanks guys for the info on HMMWVs, Hummers, etc.
Actually I am looking only for an ex-military HMMWV produced by American-General Motors and not the civilian Hi, H2 or H3. I live in Zimbabwe where the government imported Dongfeng EQ2050 - the Chinese built variants of HMMWVs just before the 2008 elections - for any "eventuality". Though they resemble the American HMMWVs, I will stay away from those Chinese stuff!
Lance, you wrote that you guys imported 15 HMMWVs some time ago. When was it and what happened to them? Were they all sent back after the movie was shot?
Cheers!

Yes, they all had to be returned to the U.S. becouse of the restriction now in place regarding the export of military vehicles. This was 2007 for the series Generation Kill. I am trying to find some more but it is very hard. Could you tell me if you are still allowed to register left hand drive vehicles in Zim, I know that it is not possible in S.A., Namibia and Botwana.

Go to this site.
http://www.mod-sales.com/
Subscribe to their mailing list and wait for the next tender.
There are often "Humvees" returning from the front line that are put up for tender.
There's nothing stopping you from importing the stuff from the UK into Zim - possibly via Walvis Bay.
Sam Levy used these guys for all those ex police bikes, the Sankey trailers and the fire engine that are parked behind his shopping centre.
I have reason to believe that John B bought those Steyr trucks of his from them - for something like £1,500 per 7 ton 4x4 truck
