Here are the pictures of the real American military HMMWV (in desert tan color) built by American Motors-General and the Dongfeng EQ2050 - the Chinese version of it imported by Zimbabwe! We know which one we would prefer - any day!

Actually I am looking only for an ex-military HMMWV produced by American-General Motors and not the civilian Hi, H2 or H3. I live in Zimbabwe where the government imported Dongfeng EQ2050 - the Chinese built variants of HMMWVs just before the 2008 elections - for any "eventuality". Though they resemble the American HMMWVs, I will stay away from those Chinese stuff!

Lance, you wrote that you guys imported 15 HMMWVs some time ago. When was it and what happened to them? Were they all sent back after the movie was shot?

Cheers!
Yes, they all had to be returned to the U.S. becouse of the restriction now in place regarding the export of military vehicles. This was 2007 for the series Generation Kill. I am trying to find some more but it is very hard. Could you tell me if you are still allowed to register left hand drive vehicles in Zim, I know that it is not possible in S.A., Namibia and Botwana.

Go to this site.
http://www.mod-sales.com/

Subscribe to their mailing list and wait for the next tender.

There are often "Humvees" returning from the front line that are put up for tender.

There's nothing stopping you from importing the stuff from the UK into Zim - possibly via Walvis Bay.

Sam Levy used these guys for all those ex police bikes, the Sankey trailers and the fire engine that are parked behind his shopping centre.

I have reason to believe that John B bought those Steyr trucks of his from them - for something like £1,500 per 7 ton 4x4 truck

I believe the NSW police in Australia bought a few hummers. I believe the were not that happy with them as they proved to be incredibly unreliabele. I imagine they would be right hand drive though. It is worth a try.

What happend to the Land Cruiser equivalent that came out around 1989. Same size and capability. I saw one in Rosebank (JHB) once. It was huge.

I sometimes see a big white Toyota Hummer thingy on the Kyalami horse plots roads. Seems to be used as a people transporter or something similar. Wider than a single lane by quite some margin.

There were 6 H1 civilian versions bought into SA before the left hand drive ban prevented anymore. these all had the 'old' engine and box - newer ones have 6 speed autos and nicer turbo diesel V8s...

as mentioned - no military versions are allowed to be sold to SA, though they visit from time to time for movies, and when the president was here once... think it was Clinton...

Hummer claim ALL military spec Hummers are accounted for, and all that have not been destroyed in action are still running, which is something like 95%, so your chances of finding one are slim!!!!

I was loaned one (a H1 civilian) for 6 weeks. BEST vehicle ever for driving through jhb in. real respect from taxis. and trucks. and everyone. As Jeremy Clarkson says, it's amazing, has the ride of a luxury german saloon. a luxury german saloon that is being dragged across a ploughed field on its roof....

The passenger seat is so far away you need a phone to speak to the passenger, but don't bother because the noise is so loud you can't talk on a phone either. IT's hugely wide and you sit against the window frame like in a Land Rover, with the engine and box under the centre console. the steering wheel is tiny, looks like it was lifted from a badly customised golf. If the engine is not running, forget turning the wheels. no chance of converting to a RHD without major engineering because of the layout of the parts... Its basically like driving an old truck. horrible in a million ways.

but it is truly FANTASTIC!!!!
