Default Disco 3 - Fuel Contamination Problems

Hi,

Been having some problems with my TDV6 HSE. When I give full acceleration, the car will go but eventually will stop accelerating. Almost like the accelerator does not function. If I push the car into neutral whil it is going, leave for a few seconds and then back into drive again, the car will continue going, provided I do not accelerate heavily. I can drive the whole day like this but it will only happen when I accelerate heavily. It also seems like it has a jerk or miss at certain revs and also like a "whoo-whoo-whoo" sound that can be heard when accelerating. This seems to be getting louder and I seldom drive the car.

After some testing, I sent it in for a fuel test and the Diesel Analysys Report failed stating that the Water Content Exceeds Specification. The car's fuel is contaminated which upon recollection, can be from a trip to Mozambique late last year when I had to fill up diesel there. I have been using 2SO in the vehicle to help prevent this from happening.

Anyway after some fights with our insurance company who will not pay, I will be fixing myself.

Sent the car in to get the tank flushed and a new fuel filter installed. They have done some tests after completion with the following results;
  • P034100 - Camshaft position sensor A (bank 1) outside specified range
  • P228800 - Rail pressure - pressure too high
  • P193400 - Driving speed signal - signal improbable
  • P120E00 - Unknown fault
They have also mentioned that the test of the injectors are not up to spec and they would need to be replaced - about R35000. The injector correction values for injectors 1-6 respectively are: 1047.52, 926.99, 1160.25, 962.95, 946.51, and 950.50.

After getting advice from some members on the forum, I was told to purchase 3 litres of Liqui Molly Diesel Purge along with 500ml 2SO. Add to the tank when the reserve light comes on and take for a good belt, keeping the revs up at all times. This still did not help.

I do not just want to replace the injectors as this is a very expensive option and would leave as a last resort. I do not notice the car smoking but this is from the drivers seat and I have not driven behind the car. I have also heard that injectors do not just pack up and that they can be cleaned ultrasonically or something like that. Is this the case?

What would you see as the way forward with this?

I am in Pietermaritzburg and would need to take to someone that can fix. Who would you recommend?

Regards,
Clyde.

Also check ECU behind battery for water contamination on the terminals.

HI Clyde

take the vehicle to Landyorx in Randburg. Peter can sort it out. If he cannot, then it is time to put a match to it

Just kidding

Landyworx can have the injectors tested and rebuilt, if necessary. Also the electronic side can be sorted out inhouse.

Good luck!

George,

I might just take the plunge and drive the car up to Randburg and leave it with Peter for a couple of days.

Clyde.

My old D3 suffered from water contamination. I had to replace both fuel pumps and all the injectors, cost to the garage was R52k. At the time there was no-one who could rebuild the injectors. Paul at The Centre in Durban sorted it out for me.

PS. How are you going to drive the car to Jhb on bum injectors, surely it will do more long term damage?

Mine wasn't the only vehicle; at the time I did a quick tally and reckoned the garage and his insurers were in for about R750k, and that was only on the vehicles I had heard about.

RobH,

I am able to drive the car on those injectors as long as I do not increase the revs over a short period of time, like not accelerating drastically. If I steadily accelerate, the car goes okay and should get to Jhb quite fine.

I do not know about the long term damage. There might not be any as the injectors will be re-built anyway.

I would not drive it that far, stuffed injectors ends up with spray patterns that burns holes through pistons at times.

Let me second what Danie and Frans have said, be very careful driving with stuffed injectors. I drove about 25km to my indie, very slowly and without accelerating like you said, and my vehicle went into limp mode on at least 3 occassions - it does this for a reason, to protect your vehicle from further damage.

Rather give Peter a call and get a verbal quote / assessment, and take it from there.

Thanks all, concerns noted. I will give Peter a call and see what he says.

Clyde.

Guys, just and update.

I have had a chat to Peter on various occasions and I am persuing the repair of my car. Upon his instruction. I have taken her to a local indie in PMB and the following has been done as:

1. Diagnostics done
2. Camshaft sensor replaced
3. CAT removed
4. EGR removed
5. Exhaust pipe replaced as it was damaged
6. Diff oil replaced

The problem is still evident.

Have now started with a diagnosis of 2S0, deisel purge and injector cleaner to try and clean out the injectors. This will be done for the next two tanks to see how the injectors respond at the next diagnostics.

Will keep you posted.

Clyde.
