Default Gun licence expire

So I got an SMS on Tuesday saying that I have to apply for my renewal 90 days before expiry date.

I thought, "self, lets rather check the dates to be sure"

Eish!!

Competincy expired on June the 11th and licence expires next week Monday

Now the run around to get that sorted.

Eish!!

I never carry my gun with me so I rather leave the licences in the gun safe with the gun just in case some fellow gets hold of my wallet and comes and visits me to borrow my gun.

I normally ignore SMS marketing. For some reason I read this specific one.

Had to renew my competency about 3 months ago.
I see that you do not get a card anymore, but a letter to say your competency is valid for the duration of the licence validity.
Looks like the date your licence is due for renewal, the competency is as well. Suspect the will probably do away with comeptency certificates.

What was the procedure to renew?

I'm busy trying to Googe it now.

Some advice: Go to the SAPS where you will hand in your application, tell them what you need to do (show them your current competency certificate and licence, etc), explain to them that you really don't want to waste their time and yours, so can they please tell you in exact detail what you must bring with when you come in to apply for renewal. Write it down whilst they explain. They see it and appreciate you doing your bit to not waste their time in the end. I did that and they gave me the relevant application forms and when I went back the second time with the documentation, it took 25 minutes including the fingerprints. Worth it.

As Louis said, its better to get all the details from them. I did the Google thing and ended up doing 3 trips to the station to get the correct documentation. Was not a big schlep to do it. If memory serves me right, it was fill in form, finger prints, pay money (R80) I think, copy of ID and old card etc. Not really such a big hassle.

Have to do the license renewal part next year.....................?

So you can part with some money , this is the whole reason behind changing the act and let everyone redo all their licenses ,

Also the reason why it has an expire date now .

I'm also surprised by this. Is it not because the competency has already expired, i.e. if you had applied 90 days before the expiry date you wouldn't have needed to re-do the tests?

the first lot who went trough this competency still expired , its only later that the ruling changed to say your competency is valid till your last licence expires. So if you get a new license before your first one expires it automaticaly extended your competency.

I dont think this is the case with Flagster hence he have to redo everything ,

What was the process, Christo - did you have to re-take the competency test, or was it just admin?

A court ruling was made a year or more ago, that the "old" card type licenses were still valid.
I wonder if there has been any changes to this ruling.
Seems quite unfair that the guys that kept to the law and changed to the new card type, are now on the losing side as they have to renew at a high cost, and holders of the old card type don't.
