Default Approved Jimny tires


By reading most of the threads regarding jimny's, there is one grey area I think all my fellow Jimny drivers would appreciate some clarification on and that is on APPROVED tires!
Suzuki says that we have to go and read our manuals if we want to replace the tires... BUT all I want is for Suzuki (or a dealership) to answer the following questions with yes or no:

Is the following tire sizes approved:

1) 205 70 R15 (Obviously )

2) 205 75 R15

3) 215 70 R15 (I believe nobody makes this size tire, but still, could it be approved IF manufactured? )

4) 215 75 R15

I've seen in other threads that manufacturers will accept a 3% or 3.5% increase in tire size. I stand to be corrected...
Also, how do you calculate to see if you are inside the permissible 3.5%?
Is it on overall diameter of the tire or just the sidewall size?

Your comments will be appreciated!

I thought only the std 205/70R15 is accepted. Where did you get the info Wizerd?

3 % on circumference ,interesting ..so we could essentially fit bigger rims with lower profile tyres an come to the same circumference.

We got this From SuzukiSA. It helps to have a direct line to Big brother.
IceCreamMan 3% is 3%, how you get there is not important.

This is a lot different than all the salesman talk going round.. I even had one guy tell me that you will lose you warranty if you fit anything else than Bridgestone. Obviously I asked him if there was a four letter word written on my forehead!

I'll have to see this on black and white before I fit anything than the standard size!

IceCreamMan - If you are planning on fitting 17" spinner mags with low profiles (within 3%), please do NOT post pics of it!!

Yes - must agree...... very different with what the sales person tells you when you standing there ready to sign...........they even arranged for mine to go for the tyre change...........now this........

Any way - mine is fine now (with regards to the wobble) and the tyres are great...........would have done the same again if I had the choice all over again...........

I think I'll go for the 205/75-15 as Wizerd recommends... but that brings me to another question: I only found Goodyear tires in this size (The ATR and AT/SA), is there any other brand(s) that manufactures this size tire

You get Bridgestone Duellers AT's in this size too. ChrisF fitted them to his Jimny - really looked nice.

There's also Cooper Discoverer ATR's, but very expensive!

Do we have this "approval" on paper yet?

I have to agree, I fitted the B/Stone dueler AT and they are amazing tyres, not only do they give jimbo a nice rugged look, they are also amazing on and off the road. Ive done 15 500 km's in just 5 months 90% on tar and i am a happy hippie.

Ps. i know this is not the right place but i still have my stock standard B/Stone Duelers, they brand new(did about 10km's from Suzuki Parow to TWT Parow) R650 a tyre- its a steal!

OK, so after changing my mind thousands of times, I decided it was time for new "tekkies" on the Jimny. I fitted 205/75R15 Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA's

Here is my experience so far:

Power loss: Only noticeable on the open road. In town its pretty much the same. This was the part I was most worried about, but I really isn't much of a issue.

Look: Great improvement. The picture doesn't do it justice. These AT/SA's even look wider, although they are still 205's. Wish you got them with white letters on the sidewall

Ground clearance: In theory the increase should be around 10mm. The car felt a noticeably higher when I got in it after fitment.

Directional Stability: Compromised a bit. It might be both a combination of AT tyres and higher profile. Then again, the ride is now softer and quieter.

Speedo readings: Almost reading true GPS speed. At about 122 on the clock I am doing 120km/h on the GPS (This also contributes to what is sensed as power loss on the open road). Odo was out around 1 km per 100, compared to GPS.

Fuel consumption: I wish I measured the consumption using GPS distance on the old tyres, to be able to compare apples to apples. Got 10.8 km/l on the last tank, using GPS distance.

Tyre rubbing: None. The did run about 5mm from the from the bumper when the wheels were turned, but a quick pull on the front bumper increased that.

Pressures: Of course they were pumped to 2 bar again, but they didn't feel as bad as std tyres pumped to 2 bar. I played around a bit, and found 1.6 bar to be the best. These tyres aren't nearly as sensitive to pressure change than the std ones. 1.6 is good all round. On std tyres dropping pressures to 1.4 made for a great ride on dirt roads. The increase in comfort isn't that significant on the new ones, when dropping pressure. I just keep them at 1.6 no matter what the terrain (for now...)

Happy chappy?: Yes considering how sceptic I was about upgrading in size, I am very happy. I can recommend this upgrade.

Price: Got them for just under R1000.00 a piece at Hi Q Menlyn. A few tyre dealers told me that this size was not available in the AT/SA yet.

I'll keep the format the same.

I decided to go with 215/80R15C Firestone Destination A/Ts

Here is my experience so far:

Power loss: Quite severe. I find pull off harder, and I change down a lot more often. Not able to keep the same speeds on the uphills as I used to with stock tyres.

Look: They're black

Ground clearance: 30mm extra. Clearance is now 220mm

Directional Stability: Compromised a bit. It might be both a combination of AT tyres and higher profile. Then again, the ride is now softer and quieter.

Speedo readings: 5km over true GPS speed. At about 115 on the clock I am doing 120km/h on the GPS (This also contributes to what is sensed as power loss on the open road).

Fuel consumption: I haven't noticed much difference. My highway commute, I do 8.4l/100km. If I push it, I end up doing over 10l/100km where I used to do 9.5 l/100km. I adjust my calculation by 8% to compensate for the difference in tyre size.

Tyre rubbing: Lots. They touched the bumper when the wheels were turned, but a quick pull on the front bumper increased that, and trimming the little tabs at the bottom edge of the bumper. They rub on the rear of the front arches. They rub the rear arches. Especially over large speed-bumps (which I usually take too fast) and at full articulation.

Pressures: Not really sure. My gauge doesn't seem to be accurate. Currently running 2bar (according to the garage's gauge) for highway use.

On-road: A lot quieter than stock. Better wet road performance. Appear to have better cornering traction too.

Off-road: Increased diameter, doesn't appear to affect off-road power. 3cm clearance is useful, appear to have decent off-road traction. I was able to get further up a steep loose slope than another Jimny with 215/75R15 BFG A/T's.

Happy chappy?: Yes, considering that they rub, and rob power, the extra clearance and off-road traction are worth it for me. I can't recommend this upgrade.

Price: Got them for just over R1000.00 a piece at Supa Quick Ruimsig.

Previous tyres: Bridgestone Dueler H/T 207/70R15 (Stock). 55000km before I replaced them. They were worn down unevenly. Reasonable on-road. Poor performance in slippery conditions.

Only one thing to add: how many thousand kilometres did you get on the original Bridgestone H/T's before they were worn out?

55000km before I replaced them. They were worn down unevenly. I'll rotate this set more often to overcome that.

Myne had 40000km, but I guess I could have gotten 50000km out of them. It was a looong wait before changing to AT's...

What about the bridgestone MT/S?... The Jimny on bridgestone Fundi challenge has them on, are they 215 75 R15?? Are they approved?..

Yup, you got up higher than me. Would like to try the hill again driving less agressive (with less wheel spin) next time.

I have the BFG 215/75R15 A/T's. With about 18mm more clearance it prevents your diffs and t-case from bumping agains some rocks.

After fitting the tyres they rubbed against the bumper while turning. Some people say you just pull the bumper away to prevent it from happening, but I had the ARB Bullbar already that 4x4 Mega World fitted the next morning. No more rubbing.

My speedometer and GPS are just about exactly the same now.

I do realise a loss of power on the highway and driving uphill. I have to downshift more often.

I would rather recommend people go for the 205/75R15's if the car will be used more for tar than offroad...

The Bridgestones MT's smallest size is 235/75R15...unless they've changed??

Maxxis are the only ones with MT's in 215/75R15 afaik, but I would like to be proven incorrect - we need more choice!

Last week the local Suzuki dealer had an add in the newspaper .... something to the effect that you get a set of off road tires included in the deal when you buy a new Jimny .....

Now WHAT size would this be ?

Maxxis international also has the trepador in 205/70 and 205/75 or 80 iirc. But it is noisey... even according to the dealers.

Speedo readings: Almost reading true GPS speed. At about 122 on the clock I am doing 120km/h on the GPS (This also contributes to what is sensed as power loss on the open road). Odo was out around 1 km per 100, compared to GPS.
Fuel consumption: I wish I measured the consumption using GPS distance on the old tyres, to be able to compare apples to apples. Got 10.8 km/l on the last tank, using GPS distance.
Tyre rubbing: None. The did run about 5mm from the from the bumper when the wheels were turned, but a quick pull on the front bumper increased that.
Pressures: Of course they were pumped to 2 bar again, but they didn't feel as bad as std tyres pumped to 2 bar. I played around a bit, and found 1.6 bar to be the best. These tyres aren't nearly as sensitive to pressure change than the std ones. 1.6 is good all round. On std tyres dropping pressures to 1.4 made for a great ride on dirt roads. The increase in comfort isn't that significant on the new ones, when dropping pressure. I just keep them at 1.6 no matter what the terrain (for now...)
Happy chappy?: Yes considering how sceptic I was about upgrading in size, I am very happy. I can recommend this upgrade.
Price: Got them for just under R1000.00 a piece at Hi Q Menlyn. A few tyre dealers told me that this size was not available in the AT/SA yet.

I have done about 6000 issue free km's on them and I am very happy. I will recommend these to anyone. Some guys complained about AT/SA's balancing issues, but I haven't experienced any of this.

I need to change my tires and I spoke with the guys at Parow. Apparently 215 75 15are not good, and you should rather stick with 205 75 15. I had the Gooedyear At/R on and they lasted me 36000kms

Jip, in my opinion 205/75R15 should be the stock tyre on the Jimny.

The danger of "scarce" sizes is that should you need to replace one tire later it can turn into a huge search and absurd prices !


I am looking at new tires for my Hilux, comparing different sizes. From the popular sizes to the less popular size there is as much as 40% price diference - for the SAME circumference tire !!

I fitted 215 75 R15's yesterday. No alignment - balancing problems. TWT handled this.
Did not notice a marked difference in torque either compared to the stock tyres.

I have joined this forum just to say a big thankyou to all the contributers to this post!
It was very informative and based on the content I explored my options for tyres for my Jimny without doing any suspension upgrades and decided on 205/75/15 Cooper HT's.
The tyres look so much better than the old original bridgestones and the ride has improved as some of you described.
As for affect on performance, no such issue for me, my Jimny is supercharged so a larger tyre is what I needed to get the gearing to stretch out that little bit more.

Just a Update on this I have a set of Bridgestones MT's 215/75R15 that I play with on 7J Steel Rims

Daily's are Wranglers 205/70R15 AT/SA also on on 7J Steel Rims.
