Fridge Wiring

Hi All

I have a small Snowmaster 220v/12v compressor fridge, the fridge works superb if I connect it directly to the battery but once I plug it in at the rear socket of my Discovery, it does not get enough power. I want to wire the fridge direct to the battery, what size wire do I use and what is the recomended size of the fuse I need.

I used 3mm wire and a 15A inline fuse at the battery...

I have used 2.5 but it seems that it is too thin to carry the amps.

Gary 6mm or even 8mmm I have used 8mm with success before. BOTH Live AND neutral wires.

I would go for a 6mm wire running on both + & - with a 20a fuse to take care of protecting the cable. This should take care of the majority of the voltage drop.
Resit the temptation to use the body as the negative, rather pull in an additional cable

I have an 80L Snowmaster in my bakkie, and my opinion is to fit a battery manament system. When I go on the long road, and I want to let my contents of my fridge to get cold quickly I set my Snowmaster on FF [ fast freeze ] . When I arrive there I set it to the temperature I want. The battery management system controls your fridge and your bakkie starting power [I do have a duel battery]. I was away from my bakkie for 4 months without staring the bakkie and when I came back my bakkie started without any problem. Difference is deep circle battery with battery manage system. The battery manage system regulates the power between your excess power supply and the staring power of you bakkie. When you set the snow master on FF [fast freeze] while driving along roads it will freeze al the content of your fridge. If your bakkie is standing still the battery manage system will minimise the power from your fridge so you are able to start your bakkie and freeze the content of your fridge again. But the content of your fridge will not go off.

I found a shop that sells car sound stuff and they can supply me with the cable, it is damn expensixe R32 per meter.

Gary, Go to the East Rand Traders (Fleamarket). There are many audio shops that sell thick cable that is used on car audio systems. I find that the cheapest stall is if you enter on the East Rand Mall gate. The audio shop is basically in front of you. You can pick up a 6 gauge for R10/metre. Regards
