Joburg to Phalaborwa
Hey all
I'm planning a trip to Phalaborwa at the end of the month, and was just wondering which route would be the best to take.
N4 via Lydenburg
or
N1 via Tzaneen.
Any reccomendations would be appreciated.

Came back from Phalaborwa to Johannesburg via Tzaneen on the N1 on Monday. The road is nice except for two stop/go roadworks sections between Haenertsberg and Polokwane; and they keep you waiting quite a while at each. And I believe that they are also blasting at Haenertsberg from time to time which could cause further delays.
Having said that, I was lead to believe that the road via Lydenberg before you get to the N4 is in very poor condition which is why I chose not to go that way.

Nope, the Lydenburg route. Much more scenic. Went to the ATKV Eiland this last longweek end via Lydenburg. Clean fast running and scenic. Average potholes you'd expect from a regional rd.

The Lydenburg road is not too bad - there are a few potholes but if you drive at 100or so you will be able to avoid the easily.
The road pas Haenetzburg, as said above is frustrating with stop- go's and the locals ignore these and then it gets dangerous.
The road through Lydenburg is much better

You can also go Stofberg, Steelpoort, Burgersfort, then turn left on to the Ohrigstad road it is shorter than going via Dullstroom Lydenburg

Listen to Flooi, he is right. The wifes boss has got property in Hans Merensky and they often sit 1-2 hours in that Magoebaskloof hell!
Hansie, I came back Lydenburg Stofberg Middelburg, road from the T-junction left towards Stoffberg is a bit bad, but not that bad. Pass from Lydenburg to that T-junction is loverly!! even for a jerrycan with trailer!

Hercules, there is a lekker road that nobody mentioned between Polokwane and Tzaneen. It’s the Houtbosdorp road. You cut out all the road works and drive through the mountains. From Polokwane drive to Tzaneen and at the SASOL garage at S23 53.170 E29 42.036 you turn left. It is a lovely quiet tar road once you are past the university.
At S23 49.096 E29 53.623, you turn right. It is right at the foot of the mountain and the signpost says Magoebaskloof. There are also a sign or two advertising chalets. The road becomes quite steep and once you cross over, becomes dirt. Don’t turn off, just follow the road. You emerge right at the top of the Magoebaskloof pas, at S23 52.123 E29 59.546
