    Default V8 viscous fan

    Hi guys.

    How do you know when the viscous fan is on its way out??
    When I stop at home after say 1 minute the electric fan comes on. But temp stays the same, and have never had a problem with the temp since she was super hot last in late Desember..

    Can it be the viscous fan? Or is it something else??

    How do you know the temperature stays the same - because the needle on the temp gauge is not moving? The standard temp gauge sits in the middle from about 60 degrees to probably 110 degrees... so it's not really a "good" measurement.
    The fan will come on if the coolant temperature is 100 degrees Celcius (and in some other cases - check RAVE, and search in this forum - I have previously had a thread about this). Could be the viscous that is dying, could be the thermostat that is a bit stiff etc. I have a madman and are monitoring the coolant temperature from a probe in the upper radiator hose going to the radiator. My V8's coolant temp is about 90 degrees when driving. If it sits idling it will go to about 95 degrees. The thermostat is only fully open at 96 degrees...

    How do you see when the thermostat is fully open??
    How do I know if the thermostat is vrot?? Or just buy a new one? She has 193k km on her..

    Try stop it while its running when warm.

    I think mine locks up when hot as it drops in power and sounds like a jet turbine.

    There are many differences resposes to this.

    I have investigated and what I believe is....When the cold engine is started the fan should start to spin. It then "disconnects" after a minute or 2. When driving at 60km + it should not spin. When you stop and idle (and it's not spinning cos you've been driving fast), it should then engage again.

    Some how, I want the fan to sound like a Cresida...
    Don't know why, but I love it with a V8

    Has anyone successfully fitted an electric replacement fan instead of the viscous on a V8 Landrover?
