Lightbulb What color is your smoke ?

    Hey guys,

Just as a matter of interest - and total ignorance of course

... in the mornings when I start up my little diesel 2.6 SUV Scorpio, it smokes a little while still cold. I noticed this morning that the smoke it almost white in color.

Just a few units from me this morning, a guy started up his Mazda bakkie (also diesel) and I noticed that his bakkie's smoke was totally black.

It makes me think that the one engine is healthier then the other perhaps? Anyone have an opinion on this ?

    Regards!

Rudi has you're suv got glow plugs or not.
some of the 2.6 models did not have glo plugs.
my bil has 2006 also no glow plugs and it smokes a bit with cold start.
could also be calabration of diesel pump or dirty filters.
if its serious amount of smoke get it checked urgently but only miner when cold , nothing will happen , just cold start without glow plugs standard i would say in winter.

    cheers

i'm not sure white smoke is good. i'm no expert, but i've read on this forum that white smoke = problem turbo. (i don't even know if your car has a turbo )

    Default Smoke..

    As a broad rule..

    Black smoke....fueling
    White smoke....water
    Blue smoke....oil...

Hi Wayne, its a 2004 model... not sure whether it has glow plugs or not? I don't think it has, as I can mearly pop the key in & start it - doesn't have a coil light either.
(I'm stating a whole lot of things, not knowing whether they even have anything to do with glow plugs or not lol!) - ur the expert

Indeed it has a turbo Ralton.

Hehe it does have a puff of white smoke in the morning, but this clears up quickly.

It's going in for a service tomorrow actually... will see whether it makes any difference.

Default Land Rover okes always have answers...

    BLACK SMOKE

Black smoke is mainly attributed to over fuelling :
    • The injector pump is set too rich, there is an excessive amount of diesel being sprayed into the cylinders.
    • The turbo charger is not supplying sufficient pressure (air) into the engine.
    • The injectors may be worn, posibly linke with some white smoke.
    BLUE SMOKE

Blue smoke is only caused by oil in the wrong places:
    • Blue smoke while idling and low revs, or a puff if smoke when accelarating from idle means the valve stem seals are shot.
    • Blue smoke while driving shown the rings are worn, usually harder to detect than in petrols but always linked to higher oil consumption.
    • Blue smoke on decelleration on long slow downhills, shows valve stem seals are shot.
    WHITE SMOKE

White smoke is a result of incorrect injection pump timing, foreign fluids and air :
    • Constant thin white smoke on idle, puffing when revving the engine.
    • Water in the fuel system - Maybe from a bad tank of fuel ? Been wading in deep water lately ?
    • Air in the fuel system - a badly sealing filter, or joint or tank return blocked

Wayne, just for the record, the Scorpio 2.6 NEF did not had any glow plugs, funny enough never had starting issues but had same white smoke during start up, however the 2.6 CRDe engine did had glow plugs. The first Bolero` did not had glow plugs, which had plenty of cold start issues, all later 2.5 engines was then fitted with glow plugs,

    Hi manne,

Swart rook is teveel diesel.

Dalk alles.

M2CW...on Black Smoke. I have noticed that when I used the latest 50ppm diesel, my exhaust (and black deposits on trailer) are far less on my 2.6 Scorpio than when I use the more common 500ppm diesel. Pulling a trailer I really notice the difference as any black smoke builds up quickly on the white paint of the trailer nose-cone. So, albeit more expensive I am now a firm convert to 50ppm....and also believe this will benefit me in putting off injector overhaul. I am currently at 98,000km.

The white smoke traces tend to disappear as engine warms up.
    Cheers,

Nee, doodreg Rudi.

My 2.6 also smoke a bit when it is very cold like now..... It disappears after a while. I also think it is because the 2.6 does not have glow plugs. Mine smoke quite a bit after startup after it stood in the garage for a week or more in the winter.

    Still an awesome machine!
