    Default Vacuum reservoir solenoid...

    Hey all

Im getting two fault codes on my '05 Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD...P1250(Vacuum Reservoir solenoid open circuit) and P1252(Vacuum Reservoir Solenoid short circuit).

Is this solenoid behind the airbox and has a small filter attached to the bottom?

Power from the Jeep is very sluggish at low revs but after about 2700rpm the turbo kicks in and it drives as normal, as soon as the revs drop below 2700rpm its sluggish again.

Any help will be much appreciated

    Gary

    Hi

Common problem. Happened to me too - Controls the turbo vanes. Thats why no power from down low.

You can get a replacement at Stealers, or import one from here.

Temp fix is: this is an on/off solenoid that is supposed to power on with the key in the run position and off with key off. The unit was designed to keep vacuum stored in the vacuum reservoir overnight to have enough vacuum to power the turbo after a morning cold start. If it has failed closed, as it did on one of our test vehicles (no vacuum allowed to turbo and no boost), you can just unplug the vacuum supply line from the engine that goes to the reservoir/on-off solendoid and plug it directly into the EVM that controls the turbo. The turbo EVM has a little dust element on the bottom side, in order to be able to tell the difference between the two solenoids. The turbo EVM has two ports, one labeled "VAC" and the other "OUT". Engine vacuum line should go into VAC and the OUT is the line to the turbo.

This is a fix to keep the engine making boost and you can get a new IVS at your liesure.

Dont let the stealers talk you into "fitting it" for a fee, its like a 3sec job

Just a quick question does it smoke a lot while it has no power if so check the throttle body by taking the boost-pipe off on that side and check the butterfly valve and make sure it is open and not closed, mine did that, after I cleaned and flipped the valve open my car ran normal. Hope it helps

    Hi Quiksilver,

Just for interest's sake, what is the price for the solenoid at the stealers?

    Cheers

if I remember correctly about R700 ex vat if they have in stock.

obviously importing just that one piece wont justify the freight. I ordered 3 fuel filters and the replacement piece for my busted blower setting for about R1500

As Warden says - that blasted throttle body is also a nuisance. mine is stuck open luckily. That being said mine smoked LOTS when the solenoid was dead, especially under heavy throttle.

If you do the temp fix you will be able to test that it is indeed the solenoid as it effectively bypasses it. It will still throw CEL.

To answer your original question - yes the thing with the little filter attached behind the airbox

The blue thing top left? thats it, pipes going into the top of it are what you need to change around like in my first post.

If you need help PM and we can chat.

    Thanks quiksilver

That's done it, Jeep back to full power

If that solenoid is a simple on/off valve though, would leaving it permanently bypassed cause any problems in the long run? Apart from the CEL?

    Good stuff

Apparently not - might just take 2 minutes or so after start up to get full vacuum, so possibly under powered temporarily. I didn't really notice that though.

Bump for a good fix. Had this on my CRD2.8 now and took SAC a week to diagnose. They know now so should be easy fix. Part including vat was about R800.
