    Default Discovery 3 questions

The past Saturday I visited Land Rover Centurion to show the wife the Discovery SE TDv6.

I questioned the sales rep on a few accessories and I would like to find out what other members driving D3's have done.

Dual-Battery System - I am looking at the national luna system (I believe Land Rover South Africa has no approved dual battery system currently). What system did you install?

Heavy duty tow bar - The D3 has an integrated detachable tow bar, but I believe it is no suitable for off-road towing (LR does have a heavy duty tow bar, but I believe that are changing suppliers). If you are towing which tow bar do you use? Any 3rd party tow bars you can recommend?

Hi-Lift jack recovery points, do you have any fitted?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hi Wahoo,

Echo4x4 have a DB system for the D3. It plugs into the rear 12V socket in the back and then to the second battery. Therefor no cutting into the wiring!

Seen a D3 with a heavy duty tow bar in pe. Simular to the older disco tow bars.

BTW current one is really strong we been towing big loads and to date no hassle with it.

Highlift points are impossible on this vehicle.

BTW No LR tanks for them either.

    Default D3

    Hi Wahoo

BRS Offroad accessories are a LR approved fitment centre. They do dual battery systems and a towbar with adjustable height. Speak to Kristen, 011 8344952. They will also advise on recovery points, high lift jack points. The owner of the business,Karl, has a D3. They also recently fitted the towbar, ARB Bar and a winch to my D3. The best deal on a new D3 is East Rand LR. Speak to Marius Rudolph on 0829087470.

Asked the dealer to fit a dual battery system before taking ownership, this why the risk is not your. Yes, I know you will pay more but at least you don’t need to worry…
For me they fitted a Genisis and i am very happy

What was the cost on the tow bar? Who makes it? How long to remove ....can you revert to std towbar again for the odd "town" trip? Just what I have been looking for ;-)

    Cheers

PS - To the best of my knowledge, LR does not have any approved fitment centres in SA. A few LR dealers however do use Karl and he is also the SA Mantec agent. His work has always been superb.

    Default Towabr

    Hi Aubrey

"LR approved" meaning Sandton LR and East Rand LR approve BRS and certain accessories fitted by him(Warn winches),spots and a few others. The towbar can be removed in 10 minutes flat- did it myself. The cost is about R2k, not bad at all. The plate can also be trimmed at the rear to improve departure angles as well.

    Cheers

    Hi Bruce

Are any new holes required ....looks like the bottom needs two holes?

Can you use std towbar when this is removed?

    Cheers

Thanks to all the replies. My ADSL was down for best part of this week.

Bruce I made contact with Marius and will go and see him when I am back from Germany in two weeks.

Do you know if the towbar is SABS approved?

    Thanks

    Hi Wahoo

I am not sure if it is SABS approved. I am not concerned about that because the quality is so good. It is certainly stronger than any standard Bosal fitted to most cars. I will worry about that if stopped by Metro cops and argue it out with them...if they ever stop me for anything. Is the standard towbar from LR sabs approved?

Wahoo, push Marius really hard, especially on accessories. This is where they really rip you off. Don't pay more than R2k for the towbar.

I am also not sure about the current discount on the TDV6....it seems as if they are not dsicounting but are expecting a price increase! The TDV6 is very popular and far outsells the V8.

    Thanks Bruce,

Bruce I see in another thread you installed a ARB bull bar. What effect did this have on the D3? What did LR say about the fitment of the ARB? If I may ask how much did this set you back?

Tiaan / Bruce, where did the place your 2nd battery?

    Thanks

    Wahoo
LR was thinking for once as they provided a space for the second battery in the enjin compartment next to the ABS unit. The only problem is that you can only fit up to a 75Ah battery in the provided space.
The duel battery control unit was fitted inside the second glovecompartment

    Wahoo

LR did not say anything about the fitment of the ARB. If however I ever have a problem with the Airbag sensors, I suspect they may have an issue then. The fitment of the bar does not affect the car at all in any way. The winch is a Warn which is LR approved and fitted by BRS who do all the LR fitments so this was approved by them. I did have to redo wheel alignment after fitment of the ARB as there is a weight difference between parts removed and the bar.

4x4 megaworld currently have a 30% discount on the ARB so it may be worth your while purchasing one now and letting BRS fit it. I would not use megaworld for the fitment as they are not LR approved. The winch also needs fitment as per LR instructions which megaworld do not do.

I paid about R15k through BRS all included. I do not have a dual battery system..yet!

    Default Battery System

On the LR Disco 3 any battery system is good as long as you do not cut into the wiring.

Examples is the Genesys, T-Max or the Nat Luna Systems. They pick up the voltage only from the Main battery and charge accordingly.

    Hi Wahoo

Speak to the guys at Frontrunner as well, a friend of mine had his dual battery system and heavy duty towbar fitted by them. They also make a nice looking bash plate.

I have not had any trouble with the standard towbar on the D3. I have towed many heavy loads.
