    Default 300Tdi Sump Leaks

    Hi Guys

    Some advice please. My 98 D1 300Tdi has always weeped from the sump a bit. This is starting to get worse and SWAMBO is not happy with puddles of Black Oil on the garage floor.................so I'm going to have to bite the bullet and fix the leak. I know that there is no gasket and can see that the previous owner or his friendly mechanic used some sort of paste, which clearly has not been successful. Please can someone who has been here before give me some advice how to go about sorting out the leak once and for all ?

    is it the sump that is leaking? quite often the oil may come from the front crank seal or even the injector pump. the wind under the car has a habit of spreading the oil making it difficult to spot the exact spot.
    remove the sump and inspect.
    fit a new gasket and hold thumbs.
    wash the engine down with engine cleaner as it makes it easier to spot the source of the leak.

    John,

    If it is indeed the sump / block joint which is leaking, there are three products which will ensure leak-free joints until the engine goes to the big place in the sky....

    1) Hylomar - originally a Rolls Royce product taken over by Loctite - it remains pliable and works better than anything else I know of, even on casings with known small imperfections - that's why it is used by many motorcycle repair shops to seal crankcase casings.
    2) Grey RTV as sold by Delta. It can however only seal very accurate surface joints.
    3) High-heat Copper silicone - cannot remember the manufacturer but available from most spares outlets. Sets to a tough but pliable joint sealer.

    I suggest you prime both surfaces to be sealed together with Loctite Primer - else a thorough wipe with thinners will also do.

    builders warehouse sell Whacker silicone.
    there are different grades.
    there is one that is oil and heat resistant. is also a grey couloured one.
    apply to the sump and leave 30 minutes to part cure and then refit the sump.
    also brilliant but as said, preparation is crucial.
