    Question Credit Card Details: Companies taking down details?

    I am noticing that more and more companies (shops, garages etc.) are taking down my credit card details when making a purchase. The "rub" down the front of my card on the slip by using a pen, thus the card number, my name, expiry date etc is on there. This is a security risk in my opinion .;

    AFAIK, this was not required or allowed. Did anything change in this regard, or are these okes taking chances?? I don't like my details in the hands of unknown persons. Any bank related persons on the forum that is in the know?

    They can't do a purchase without the last 3 digits on the back of your card by the signature.

    I've also encountered this a couple of times.

    This is quite easy to get when they do the transaction with your card - they simply turn it over and steal the info with their eyes. Along with your info on the front they can do some serious damage to one's account.

    they do it to have proof that you used your card at the shop.

    It helps with people saying their card has been stolen / duplicated.

    If I catch them in time, I simply refuse that they copy my details and will cancel the purchase if they don't want to cooperate. So far they have backed down, but keep on telling me that their management requires this and that it is allowed by the banks. I reckon this is nonsense and they are taking advantage of the clients lack of knowledge on the subject.

    I can understand that - but it creates a security risk on my side. I have had only two cashiers this year that actually checked my signature on the back of the card to make sure it is me. If they are so worried about fraud, surely this is the first measure to be enforced??

    Blank out the last 3 digits on the back of your card .

    No online transactions without these 3 digits .

    No shop purchases , because they dont have the card .

    When buying from Cashbuild, they actually enter all the details into the computer, card no, expiry date and the cvv number at the back........

    That really makes me angry! It is against MasterCard, Visa etc regulations to store the cvv in any form after the transaction has been authed/declined. You must send the cvv with a card not present transaction (internet payment for example), but only in an encrypted form.

    Report anybody doing something you are not comfortable with to your bank ASAP. They loose a *LOT* of money everyday due to fraud.

    Stand up and do the right thing. Lead SA and all that

    In theory if you have a chip card it should never leave your hands... You plug the card into the machine, you enter the pin and you remove it from the machine. The cashier should never even touch the card! Let alone take an imprint or enter numbers on a computer!

    ASk them for their ID if they want all those details. If they ask why, well if something goes a miss you have the skelm.

    As long as you spot any spurious transactions fairly quickly, your bank will cover you against fraud. So you should suffer no losses if you activate your sms notifications and read through your statement every month.
