    Unhappy 2.5 D Ford Ranger STILL overheating.

    Hey guys..

    I need some help please, as I am at my end with the bakkie!

    I had the exact same problem as SCO had with his Ranger, I replaced a radiator and hoses and yesterday the head. Got a brand new one with a 1 year warrantee. Took it to get rebuilt with the old ones valves etc.

    I got it running a few minutes ago (18:05- 23 sept 2010) Just for good measure and seeing as the head was replaced took my injectors to get overhauled, and it didnt want to start at first as I tightened the injectors too much and distorted them.

    That sorted the bakkie fianlly started.

    Took it for a test drive around the "block" and all was well untill I reached an incline, it started to get very hot very quick, so I pulled off immediately. Dusgusted I walked back home.

    Please help

    silly question, did you do the thermostat?

    Thanks for the quick responses, I will get new thermostat saturday...

    My friends suggested a new radiator cap??

    Thing is the new radiator didnt come with a new one, but I had to get one cause old one wouldnt fit. Chances of the new radiator cap failing??

    Both are inexpensive - I suggest if the thermostat doesn't do it - which I am sure could be the problem, just replace the cap aswell.

    Umm, why doesn't your old cap fit? What radiator is/was in the bakkie? If not a stock one, are you sure it is big enough?

    There was a Chinese radiator in the bakkie, I got it with the china radiator. I now have a proper one in, its the same size, but is original.

    The cap on the china radiator is the same size as one from a Toyota conquest.

    I had to get a bigger radiator cap..

    Sakkie,

    I agree, change the thermostat, because it is cheap. You probably should have replaced it first and maybe saved the R10-15k I reckon you have thrown away on "faultfinding"

    You need to find yourself someone who can faultfind correctly. A good old fashioned mechanic might spend 1/2 a day fiddling around finding out what is wrong before he touches his spanners, then replacing one part and solving your problem. The new breed of "mechanic" will just grab any part almost at random off the shelf, install it, invoice it, and if the problem is still there he goes back to the parts shelf. This guy will replace 1/2 of your bakkie before luck or elimination brings him around to replacing the bad part.

    We can try to help out here as much as we can to guide you to the problem.
    Start by describing a typical cold start to overheat cycle:
    How long before temp gauge starts to move?
    How long to reach middle of scale?
    Does it ever stabilise there or just keep going up?
    If it stabilises, can you drive around if you keep the speed down and avoid stop/start?
    If it doesn't stabilise, pop the bonnet and check water pipes/radiator temperature and report.
    Anything else- hard to start/misfire/smoke/etc?

    Hey guys...

    The overheating is sorted out, was the thermostat. So glad thats over, but I blew headgasket... I did something stupid when I fitted it.

    In the front there is a oil duct from which the oil basically gets pumped into the head, the previous headgasket had some sealant there. So when I fitted it I also put sealant there, but I think maybe too much and as the pressure built up satruday when taking it for a test drive it blew the gasket where the sealant is.

    With my luck my uncle phoned me this morning and said it can only be that, I described the noise it made etc..

    So the overheating is sorted out, going to fit a new headgasket and then everything will be ok!!

    Glad it was all sorted.

    Which year model was the 2.5?

    Around 2000/1 had inefficient Radiators fitted, which was rectified later and fitted with a more local Uprated Radiator.
