    Default taking meat through Botswana

We have been in Europe during the past 3 months and I am now doing serious planning for our next trip. What is the current position with taking meat into Botswana from South Africa? At the time we left there were bans in place because of Rift Valley Fever - do these still apply?

Restrictions lifted, no more reports of any hassles.

Remember South to North is okay, so is East to West.
Restrictions are in opposite directions for meat from hoofed animals.

Thanks for the info. That will make the catering easier, particularly for the first night.

Which way are you travelling - we got a certifiacte at the first roadblock going North after Gahnzi (advised by the owner of Thakadu Bush camp in Ghanzi) - after that we showed them the certificate which showed the meat was purchased ouside a foot and mouth area and had no problems. By the way why buy you meat in SA - there is great meat in Botswana as well.

Just got back on Monday from Bots. South to North along the main road from Martins Drift to Kasane was fine. North to South is banned and they will check your freezer, spray your shoes etc at a few of the veterinary points.

I agree there is great meat in Botswana but the first night we won't be near anywhere to purchase any and I also want to freeze some before we leave. There is an excellent butcher in Kasane where I may stock up if there are no problems taking meat through the Caprivi into Zambia. If there is I will have to get something in Katima, a town we have yet to visit having used the Kazungula ferry on previous trips.
