Default What's the best oil for my engine?

My old Series II Landy has a Ford Cortina V6 3L petrol engine, which runs beautifully.

I've been mostly using "Super" that you get from most petrol garages (I think this is a 20W50 grade), but I'm not sure if this is correct for my vehicle.

I have noticed that when the car is still cold the oil pressure is often pretty high - but I think this is cus of the high viscosity of the cold oil

Should I rather be using "multigrade" or a less viscous oil (I think this is maybe a 10w40... I don't a hell of alot to be honest).

    Thanks!

The Ford Essex V6 is an old generation engine therefor it should not be run with oil lower than 20W50 viscosity which is a multigrade.

10w40 and 15w40 is for new generation multivalve engines with have tighter/smaller clearances. Do not use it in the V6.

And if I may add, DONT buy the cheapest no-name brands.
Buy the best oil your budget allows and change every 10000km because sludge is a killer.
Nothing wrong with Castrol GTX in the V6.

    Thanks for the advice!
Does it matter whether I use "super" or "multigrade" from the garage? and I guess you shouldn't mix them, so if I need to switch will I need try drain the oil first?

your engine should have a high pressure bypass so don't worry about the pressure.

I have found Caltex Delo 400 to be a fantastic oil in both my petrol engines ( Mitsu V6 3.0 & VW 1.8 )

Both my engines don't use any oil or make any lifter noise from the hydraulic lifters/VLA's

If you search around you will find very heated debates about the quality of Caltex delo 400. The general consensus is that it is a very good oil in both petrol and diesel cars.

    Stick to multigrade = 20w50.
    Dont mix brands.
Change oil filter with every oil change.
Dont take shortcuts with an old engine.
If you cant afford Delo 400 there is always Delo Gold.
On a tight budget I would stick to GTX in the V6.
    Nothing less.

If you mean by Super that it is a 30 or 40 mono grade then yes to both your questions
