I might be daft, but perhaps someone here can answer the following:

Are those vehicles not heavy enough to ram the cars out of their way when they try to pull them over?
Or do they not have enough torque to push them if its in traffic? How the hell do they get them to stop in the first place?

Also, dont they have firing holes like on a caspir or a njala, so they the guys inside can shoot back, on the move, from a pretty safe place?

Make the CIT van a gunship and blast the guys in the cars before they can even stop you.

I don't understand why the companies that transport the cash advertise themselves like that. Sure, armourplate the vehicle, but start using different types of vehicles with Acme Drycleaners and other innocent branding on the sides.

They have just become moving targets and the poor guards are sitting ducks in the firefight.

    You will last 5 seconds.

The guys that hit these things don't sit on the side of the road waiting for a van that says "I got money, hit me" signs on the side to pass by.

This is seriously planned stuff, with inside info.

Maybe the revival of a functional and disciplined SARS will drive this down again. Apparently the 2006 CIT crises was quenched by introducing the rule you may not do cash transactions above R50k. So the robbers couldn't spend the cash. Maybe SARS got lax on this under T Moyane?

The Boksburg heist this past week got my attention more than any other recent heist. Maybe because it happened not too far from where I stay. Maybe itís because I travel that road virtually every day.

I saw the full videos (not the edited ones on the news websites). In one video the perps randomly fired their weapons (automatic R4ís and semi auto pistols) for up to 4 and half minutes in all directions. There were quite a few cars trapped in a traffic jam and could not escape the situation.

Drivers were stuck inside their cars and took cover by lying low below window level. I canít stop wondering what I would do if I was caught in a situation like that in my vehicle without an escape route. What if my wife and kids were also strapped in my vehicle in the line of fire?

Without doubt I learnt that my driving habits need to change and we need to have escape routes all the time. Even if itís going to be bumping and scratching someone elseís car out the way we seriously need to be far more alert.

Fluffy is correct! This is very well planned, and most likely practised somewhere. You also need to ask yourself, how do they know that the vehicle has cash in it, they are not just randomly assaulting these cash in transit vehicles, how do they know it didn't just drop all it's cash off, and is now empty.

There is a solution to this, but it's expensive. That's why banks bank charge you and arm&leg when you deposit cash, they now have to get it somewhere using these types of services. Rough business to be in. Wonder what these guards get paid? Wonder how good their training is?

Lot of inside info. Add to this cops are involved. Not always as robbers but getting guns, escorting robbers to and from...

Planning is done by specialists. Those who take part in the actual robbery are just foot soldiers.

I'm not saying that the vehicles should be any less protected, just not so visibly marked as CIT vehicles.

Anyway, if it were my money being moved around, I would follow a completely different strategy, because the one they have now is not working.

I would move the cash in smaller quantities in different unmarked vehicles. If there are 5 possible targets and 1 robbery gang, maybe 80% of the cash would reach the destination instead of zero.

I also believe that the robbers rely heavily on inside information, so that would be another area to devise a new strategy to minimise the risk.

It has been said before that CIT robberies increase significantly before an election year because the ANC needs cash for their election campaign. If there is even a remote possibility of that allegation having a grain of truth in it, whoever is investigating these robberies also need to look into that.
