Default Vehicle Advice - 4x4 for SA road trip

    Hi community members

I hope I'm posting this in the right topic area. I'd really appreciate some experienced advice from the forum.

Some background for context. I'm doing my planning and research for a trip around South Africa as a break from the corporate world, and my focus at the moment is the vehicle to do the trip in. I've done a fair bit of reading and searching on the forum, and am hoping for inputs on some specific questions.

I'm not mechanically experienced but I'm confident with the basics, and so I'm not keen on any vehicle that's likely to require constant repair and maintenance. I'll be driving some of the SANParks transfrontier regions and the west coast (possibly also Bots and Namibia), and will be towing an off-road trailer, but it's more of a road trip than a hardcore off-road expedition. Vehicle budget in the range of R150-200k.

    My shortlist that I'm considering:
    Toyota Prado 3.0 Tdi
    Mitsubishi Pajero Gen3 3200 Di-D
VW Touareg 2.5 or 3.0 TDI

I'm keen on the diesel options specifically for their towing ability and relative fuel efficiency over the petrol alternatives. Any opinions on the suitability of these choices and my budget? Are there any very important issues on any of the models to watch out for? Some guidance and opinions on the sort of mileage and vehicle age that would suit this sort of purchase. And any references for experts in the various manufacturers that are recommended for independent inspections of potential vehicles?

I've also given consideration to more options, but for various reasons haven't focused on them. Toyota Land Cruiser 80/100; Nissan Patrol; Subaru Forester; Land Rover Disco and Range Rover. Would there be compelling reasons to given these options strong consideration?

Thank you in advance, and thank you to the forum community for the wealth of knowledge that I've been able to read through already.

Is there a specific reason why you have to have an SUV/Station Wagon?

Have you considered a 4x4 DCab?

Thanks, yes I have considered a DCad. I guess the SUV preference is partly a personal preference, and partly a compromise for an SUV vehicle that seems more suited to lifestyle and everyday use after the trip.

I think in my budget range, I get more vehicle for my money with an older SUV over a Fortuner. But I'll definitely test drive a Fortuner if I find one in the right specs.

Thank you. I'll definitely look at the 80'series. Any opinion on the old turbo diesel performance on the open road? How would it be expected to perform with a trailer?

Slow and slower. Overtaking must be planned.

But, o so reliable. And slow is perfect for a holiday!

    Hi Petri,

Thank you for the info. Both are a lot of vehicle for a reasonable cost, but I'm going to be focused on diesel options first and foremost, so will only look at petrol if I have no success in my search.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I've been to see a few vehicles to get a better idea of my short list.

i haven't found a good example yet, but I really like the Pajero as a versatile option, and it looks like either a late model Gen 3 or early Gen 4 LWB would be in my budget. Are there any major differences between the models that would make the Gen 4 a better choice for a little extra cost?

And I've started searching the Land Cruiser Club site for LC80 options, but it looks like finding one in the right specs might be a challenge.

I'll update this thread with any progress, and more questions for the experts.

    Thank you

You are not going to go too far wrong with either a Gen 3 or 4. They do tend to have a little sag at the back if you rig them for over landing but nothing airlift bags wont sort out for you. I am a 3.8i petrol fan but the 3.2 DiD is legendary. Get a hold of Mitsitech on facebook https://www.facebook.com/Mitsi-Tech-...29093530550191

He may know of some good leads for you to chase and a great contact if you need to kit your rig.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.
