BUT in my opinion it was frivolous
we visited there in 2016, as rustic as it was I saw no issue with the buildings
(but you know my stance on frivolous laws like icsasa stickers )

They didn't lose their property, all they have to do is rebuild but follow regulation.
Interesting observation about the local informal settlement close by - those structures are fine?

Most probably not. Hence the only argument that Harold could advance is the liquor license and the health certificate which doesn't make the structures legal.

The justification of some others are based on the squatters being left untouched - the squatters are however not a public establishment. So what happens if the building tumbles in onto non-suspecting public visitors or children and no insurance pays out?

Understand me right - I've enjoyed a few cold ones at that pub and hoped to do so again later this year! But if you want to take public money, you must play fair.

the original structure (their own home) are almost on the river, and they were allowed to keep that, providing they submit plans etc for it in 30 days.

The structures they erected have to be brought down.
It's a plan issue, nothing about the flood line.

There are 4 other articles from last year as well.

    https://www.oudtshoorncourant.com/Ne...ished-20170711
    https://www.oudtshoorncourant.com/Ne...-spot-20170711
    https://www.oudtshoorncourant.com/Ne...trade-20170711
    https://www.oudtshoorncourant.com/Ne...iness-20170711

This bit from the second article linked above is really the gist of it:
Harold and Angie vehemently deny that they were ever informed that it was illegal to erect any structures on the plot.

"When we started we were told by an official of Eden Municipality in Uniondale to apply for consent to put up structures and run a pub and camping site. We did that, but never received a reply," maintained Angie.
If you apply for something and supposedly don't receive a reply, why on earth would you just assume that it's fine to proceed?

Sure, it sucks to have to demolish stuff, but objectively it doesn't seem like there's much reason for them to complain.

If that is the case then there is a shopping centre (one of which I know, there might be more) here in P town because it is definitely situated inside the 100 year flood line - money talks unfortunately I believe the one in Potch might also be inside the flood line it's cellar section has been flooded a couple of times.

So then. Knysna municipality or Eden Municipality, need to demolish half the homes and structures in Sedgefield. They have been flooded twice in the past 15 years. Whats good for the Goose.......

The absurd part of this is that the KM approved building below the flood line. How those home owners get flood insurance I don't know.

We've often called in at Angie's G Spot on the way over the Prince Alfred Pass en route to Baviaanskloof or Graaff-Reinet, from Plett. We even stayed the night once (not quite 4 star!). The food is always excellent and the beer's cheap. The slightly ramshackle look of the place was very much part of its appeal. Let's hope Angie and Harold can get it (legally) up and running again. It would be a real shame if characterful stops like Angie's were to disappear altogether.

The ramshackleness is what I find appealing, these sterile built to spec with the pretty pictures and signs places normally have no soul, it always seems like their main objective is making money and not much else.

Latest report and read the comments below the report. (especially Angie's)

The people of George are gatvol with their town council because there appears to be uncontrolled nepotism.
The Hawks have raided the offices and homes of senior municipal staff as well as councillors.
The mayor has been placed on leave.

It appears that us Cape Town folk and George residents have interesting times ahead and the DA cannot be too comfortable.

Actually, it IS both issues: building structures and flood lines.

The whole matter was dragged out for three years, after which the municipality got fed up and closed the place down.
