When Mbeki was recalled many people left the ANC as a matter of principle, some because they wouldn't associate themselves with a Zuma administration and some because they were Mbeki supporters and felt he was being given a raw deal. Some cabinet ministers even resigned although they remained in the ANC.

I don't know if there are many, if any, in fact, such moral grounds for supporting Zuma. Those who've supported him up to now would have nowhere to go.
    There is only one...

I hope that Zuma is unstable enough to spill the beans on who did what to whom and when.
The political gene pool needs a strong shot of chlorine in it.

They can merely ask him nicely to resign. And if he refuses there is nothing they can do.

The only body that can fire him as president of the RSA is parliament.
I believe they can "recall him" as they did with Mbeki?

No Mbeki resigned when the ANC did the recall

Legally he did not have to do so.

Zuma is well within his legal rights to stay in place

The only place he would not have a option is if a vote of no confidence is passed in parliament.

But that has further consequences for the ANC in that the speaker becomes the president and the president, deputy president and all the ministers is disbanded

They then have to choose new president within 30 days

Where it would be easier if Zuma resigned since then deputy president just becomes the next president until the next election

resign or not Zuma, is buggered.

I have a feeling he'll take his chances in a parliamentary vote-of-no-confidence. The opposition are pushing for early elections and are unlikely to support such a vote.

What if the ANC alone are not able to muster the 50% plus 1.

Sorry but the next vote of no confidence is already booked to be done 22 February

And it was brought to parliament by the EFF and DA.

There will be no early elections if it is not passed.
And even if it is passed then there will also be no early elections

That will only happen if it is passed and parliament (so the ANC majority) does not appoint a new president within 30 days.

So the EFF and DA would have to be the worlds dumbest idiots to not jump at the chance to vote out Zuma when their vote of no confidence reaches parliament (Since then they can officially claim that they got the ANC president kicked out)

After the opposition parties represented in Parliament met on Monday, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said they have resolved that they want the motion of no confidence in Zuma, currently scheduled for February 22, to be heard this week.

After that, a motion must be brought to dissolve the National Assembly, which if successful, will necessitate the calling of early elections.

I don't see the ANC caucus agreeing to dissolve parliament.

if Zuma goes, CR may be able to get the ANC in reasonable shape to win the 2019 elections - not good for the country.

Should the opposition, come voting time, not support a vote of no confidence and instead leave the ANC to sort their own mess it'll further fragment the ANC - even if it takes the country further "to the brink".

Better closer to the brink now than another ANC government post 2019.

No it would only lead to that if it is taken further

It does not lead to a automatic re election at all.

Yes the DA and EFF is trying to push it to that but it would only lead to that if the ANC does not elect a new president within 30 days.
Which obviously would be good for the opposition which is why they are trying to push for that

But if a vote of no confidence is passed then a new president can be elected within 30 days by parliament without it going to another election.

In which case the next election will continue as scheduled in 2019

    @Veneficus

    that's the legal standing, yes.

ANC have said Zuma must go. I'd prefer the opposition not to aid the ANC in ridding themselves of Zuma.

If the ANC is not able within their own parliamentary caucus to get 50% +1 getting rid of Zuma remains their problem. This is good because it will further implode the ANC, catastrophically so.

There's bigger fish to fry than simply getting rid of Zuma.

Imploded ANC = better for the country

A lovely thought, come to think of it.

We have a corrupt Pres, but we dont want him out because he has done nothing wrong.

We cannot get him to resign.

    We cannot fire him.

Please forget about all this, and vote for us.

When they have the no-confidence vote, it should be open ballot this time, not closed. So CR can see who still supports Zoompie.
