    Default Report - Dec 17 trip to CKGR and Damaraland

    We did our first trip to the CKGR in December, and then went via the Nyae Nyae Pans to Etosha. A fast pass through Etosha led us to the Damaraland riverbeds, via the Khowarib Schlucht.

    As always,Pam took the photographs and I just drove.

    I am attaching Parts 1 and 2 of my report, which cover the approach and the CKGR.

    Wonderful report again- I've been spellbound at the computer when I should be doing other things! As an aspiring bird photographer myself, I am really appreciating the superb pictures. Those crimson-breasted shrikes are damnably difficult to photograph- always skulking in thickets- so the shot Pam got is great.
    Can't wait for next instalment. Hoping the tyre and fridge problems get sorted. Were you carrying 1 or 2 spare tyres?

    @jcole

    Thank you Janet, Pam appreciates your comments. I actually didn't include the crimson-breasted shrike on the first draft, and Pam objected: "I've spent years trying to get that shot - you have to put it in." She say's that the two-note call means "I'm here" and a second later "I'm gone".

    We do carry two spare wheels, and we were able to sort out a new one and a fridge repair in Maun.

    Great reading and very nice photo's.

    Did you really bury the contents of the freezer ?

    Surely it would not have spoilt when the temperature rose above zero for a day, or so ? I've carried vacuum packed steak in my rucksack on numerous 5 day hikes before without it going off.

    @ J Snyman

    Thanks Johan.

    Perhaps I over-reacted on the meat issue, but my thinking was as follows:
    - I wanted to switch off the fridge before the continuously running motor damaged itself or destroyed the battery. The inside temp would quickly reach 25+.
    - We would have eaten the food with suspicion of every mouthful. Not the way to enjoy your dinner!
    - Travelling alone, with no means of summoning help, even a miniscule risk of us both going down with food poisoning is not acceptable.

    I often think that the folk who take the trouble to do trip reports are not accorded enough credit. Especially if they are of the standard produced by Rod, with super pics from Pam.

    I have never visited Bushmanland and the Nyae Nyae area but my appetite is now whetted, thanks.

    Great report and wonderful photos. The colours of the birds are so vivid. We rarely get good photos of birdlife.

    Reading this report in a dark, cold and wet UK brings back so many wonderful memories of Botswana which has lifted my spirits. Thanks for brightening up my day.

    Thanks for a wonderful report with superb photos. The Nyae Nyae Pans look stunning.

    It is incomprehensible how elephants became frequent in CKGR over the last few years.

    Thank you, Rod and Pam, for this excellent report. I never comment south of Zambia, but have to make an exception this time to acknowledge your time and effort.

    I thought you were going to Central/South America and would have shipped your vehicle by now?

    @Wazungu Wawili

    Thank you WW. Our American trip is still coming, and we had booked to ship our vehicle during February. The intention was, and hopefully still is, to start off in the US in the spring, and follow the sun all the way down, reaching Ushaia in Jan or Feb 2019. The complication is that, during the trip we are reporting on now, we faced up to the fact that what everyone has been telling us is true: An RTT rig is not suitable for the trip. We got back home on 6 January and on 11 Jan we placed an order for a camper conversion for our Hilux. We are now sitting around waiting to get it back from the gearbox people, after which we will give it the camper people, after which ..........

    Hence we have time to work on our report.

    That’s great, RodS. Good luck with the conversion (will be good not to have to dress lying down), bon voyage, and bonne route.

    Thank you all for the encouraging comments.

    I have added Part 4, which takes us through the Khowarib Schlucht. I thought that this was one of the most enjoyable days.

    So nice!!! Rod, after you've finalized the reports, would you mind sharing the route from the Khowarib Schlucht? Bit small on the PDF

    @Nys

    No trouble at all. All you need to do is put the following 3 waypoints into T4A and tell it to make the shortest route.

    The one marking the Klein Serengeti turnout is there to force it to take the river, and not the Beesvlakte.

    Great report RodS and I hope the Black days at the start were put behind you. I know those feelings - also buggered up a RTT and tyre and you do feel down.

    But great notes and stunning photographs; makes my 4x4 selector itchy.
