Default Bezuidenhouts Pass & Sandspruit Pass

Anyone been on these two passes lately?

    Pictures? Videos?

We'll be staying at Drakensville the first week in January and I want to try and do at least one of them while we are there.

We got to do Bezuidenhouts Pass on the 4th of Jan

Didn't take many pictures but have dash cam footage of the whole trip and the road to the top of the Pass. We did it from top to bottom and will hopefully do it from bottom to top in December.

When we got to the top I was a bit hesitant going down the pass as it looked very intimidating and we where alone with no winch but another guy arrived and allowed us to tag a long with them all the way down.

Some pics on the way to the pass

This video goes with it. (No sound & highlights only, please excuse the amateur editing and quality )

I'll post the pictures and the video of us doing the pass when I'm finished editing it.

Thanks for the link to this thread.

When I did it, I went the other way around. I'm guessing the descent the way you did it (i went up) must be tricky if wet!

Have you noticed Retief pass on your RHS before you started going up? I need to do this one, will probably make a weekend out of it and play in the area.

We went to the Kaalvoetvrou monument and apparently (according to this thread) Retief Pass starts just after that However we did pass a board next to the road that said Retief Pass so I'm not sure where it is anymore. The road we took to Die Kaalvoetvrou was just a normal gravel road. Not very scenic either. We also went to Retiefklip. The road to Retiefklip can be very interesting in the wet.

It took us 1.5 hours to get to the top of the pass from Sterkfontein Dam's side on a gravel road as per first video.

It took us about an hour from where the pass starts on the top, through to the bottom where the tar road starts. I think if you do it from the bottom up it will take you between 1.5 and 2 hours.

Our average speed on the pass was around 4km/h using Descent Control most of the time.

Hi Flagster - as a matter of interest what Dashcam do you have.
    It's an excellent picture.
