The context of being called Oom is very important.

The other day flying back home I sat next to a pretty girl probably around 18-19.
At first I thought, great I don't have to sit next to another overweight guy again

    Then she called me Oom

When I come into power the word will be banned.

How do you know you are officially an "Oom"? The moment you start your sentences with "Toe ek jonk was" or "In my dae" or "Toe ek so oud soos jy was".

I have found myself doing that more often the past few years

what i absolutely dislike is when someone walks up and says something like

" Hi there, how can i help"..No name or designation is used.
Please call me Piet or Sir or Cur or something.
    its called manners.

I always thought i was well mannered

Now i hear if i call an older guy Oom in disrespectful, and if i ask a stranger how he/she is today im irritating

Also i have to get a PA to get good service at car dealerships.

I cannot wear shorts and expect good service.

I cannot get good service from a guy wearing shorts.

I didnt read the whole thread, but I have to confess to doing the same in reverse. Our local Isuzu dealership didn't look "kosher". In other words it didn't have huge windows and big bright lights. So both my wife's new Cruze and my Isuzu were "imported" and serviced out of town. When I started arranging last year's Isuzu Adventure, I e-mailed the GM bigbosses to hear if they wanted in on the action. Long story short I ended up having a meeting with the local DP. The guy with the small windows and old lights.

What a great guy, and so is his service manager. My cars are now serviced there and they sold me the new Trailblazer.

They have since spent millions on refurbishing the building and now also have big windows and bright lights. Luckily their service is still tip top and they survived the GM pull out chop.
