    Default Amarok Suspension Upgrade Options

    Hi there,

Any advice or recommendations with regards to a suspension upgrade on a 2011 Amarok?

So far, I found the following options:
    EFS
    Old Man Emu
    Tough Dog
    Ironman
    Seikel

I also saw a thread that mentioned an upgrade that is done by Mikem?

I currently have the Seikel Field & Forest kit installed, with the 3-leaf springs at the back.
It's now time for an upgrade and I need more ground clearance...
I'll be adding a "bullbar" and winch soon, and at the back I've currently got a drawer system, 60l fridge/freezer, canopy and extra fuel tank.

My Amarok is out of warranty, so not bounded by that anymore.

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated!

I'm in the same boat as you. Mikem quoted me R20k for suspension upgrade with billsteins.
Sportsvan has a suspension upgrade for R10k (ni shocks)
Another supplier quoted me R15k for a lift and Koni raids.

Seems like the going rate so far on most of the brands mentioned above are around R26k - R27k...

I have Mikem with bilsteins, but im not sure how they will cope with a steel front bumper and winch and a constant load at the back. That is maybe something an expert can advise u on, as that front bumper and winch could weigh quite a bit. The rear will definately need an upgrade as well. For actual clearance consider putting bigger tyres on.

The seikel field and forest consist out of front coils and a lift at the back with shocks standard. Do the desert kit and they ad the seikel shocks and you can upgrade the leaf springs and ad more lift.

I have the desert kit on with the three leaf springs. Nothing rides better on the gravel. I can do 140 on our gravel here with no problem.

The Seikel tribe will be here shortly. As you should know, nothing compares to Seikel. I've been told it even provides a 25mm boost to your manhood.

Thumbs up Re: Amarok Suspension Upgrade Options

Give Darrel a call at Mikem suspensions. He has sorted me out with great service.
I installed 2x front Bilstein B6 shocks and 2x Mikem upgraded coils ( progressive) and 2x rear b6 Bilstein shocks and spacers between axle and leaf springs. gave me about 60mm in the rear and 55mm up front.
All in all it came to about R15000. The Bilstein shocks completely change the handling and ride ( for the better) .
The uprated coils are stiffer when needed. No more bottoming out on large knocks.
The Bilstein shocks are also fully serviceable...

You wont get any additional lift since you already have a lift. Anything more might cause damage anyway. What is the mileage now? I would just replace the shocks if you want. Do you have a lot of sag at the back? If the bumper etc cause the front to drop you might have to consider heavy duty in front. Give me a call if you want to discuss.

Btw, how is my old Amarok going?

Make sure that the coils are slightly longer than standard, you don't want to lift the front by using the shocks...
The bilstein front shocks are adjustable. Keep them on the standard setting and gain lift by means of longer coils, by doing so you have more wheel droop and preserves the shock when under full extension.

One question, is the front shock the standard items, or longer to compensate for the longer coils.

I have the B6 Billstein shocks and coils from Mikem that is 35mm longer, but over speed bumps the coils over extend. I have now taken the coils out.

should not do that, I had the same problem. You achieved your lift by using the shock. Get longer coils and keep the shock in the standard position.

I have experimented with the standard coils, longer coils and progressive longer coils. The latter is the winner!

I have longer coils and the standard B6 shocks. Surely the shock is more extended in the "rested" position than before, due to the longer coil?

So when extending, it will reach it's maximum length sooner.

Look, when you jack the front up by means of compressing the coils( positioning the shock coil cradle higher)- you are preloading the coil quite a lot.

This will affect your droop and result in a very abrupt extension in situations where you rapidly move over uneven terrain eg. Pavement etc.
By keeping the shock at its standard setting, you are also not compressing the coil more than what it should be at rest.

You are always going to reduce wheel droop if you don't compensate with longer shocks ( or in extreme cases, replace A-arms etc)
however, the method that I used worked... I don't have any issues with over extension anymore...

In short, jacking the front up using the shocks resulted in substantial wheel droop loss. Longer coils resulted in less...

When did u have your Mikem kit installed. I have the same kit and setup as Clubbie with the same result.

I would really like to get rid of that bottom out effect if I can. Did you get all the coils from Mikem that you refer to in your post?

I definitely asked for longer coils and if I remember correctly the old vs new was still shown to me. So I am convinced I went for the long er coils with the shocks. The initial plan for me was only to get the longer coils up front and blocks at the rear with the standard shocks in place. Upon removal of the shocks we noticed the one shock was buggered completely and then only did I order the bilsteins shocks. It might be the setting on the shock then as you say, but I am not sure how the shocks will have to be set?
