    Default 40 liter Engel fridge

I am all new to an camping fridge and need some advice.
I recently bought a second hand 12V/220V Engel fridge for our camping trip starting this Saturday.
We will be going to Southern Namibia (fish river & Richtersveld) and then down the west-coast to Cape town.

I have bought the fridge, plugged it into 220 Volts in the house, to see if it is working and I was really impressed.
The temperature were at a constant -18.5 C and at night it dropped to -22 C.

So Friday I put it into the fortuner to see what it will do on the 12 Volts.
The lowest it reached (at night early morning) was -2 C.
Yesterday at 12pm it was standing on +4.5 C and it was not open since Saturday morning.
The fridge is still at its coldest setting. Same as what it was in the house n 220 V.
I do have the isolated bag in which the fridge is standing.
I use a brad Harrison connector plug and the fortuner does have a second battery.

My question is, is it normal for the fridge to only reach -2 C on 12 Volts and +4.5 C at midday ?

From what I can remember when I still had my Engel 40 rigged up via the same setup in my FT (and Echo 12v when at campsite), it maintained what is was set to, e.g. -5 etc.
Are you sure it is getting a continual power supply during the time?

Did you test it with contents or an empty fridge ?

My 40lt Engel will reach and maintain -18 or colder on the coldest setting whether on mains or battery power.

From what you describe something not right.

Either the battery is not good or the fridge is faulty. Make sure the battery is fully charged and have what it takes to keep the fridge going, if it is and it struggles to go below -18 overnight there is something wrong.

My money would be on the battery not delivering as it should.

check second battery, is it fully charged, you should use a trickle charger at least once a month because normal driving will not fully charge second battery

    Sorry, to add a comment.

If on the coldest setting and running at temperatures of +4.5 degrees does the compressor run? Because it should run continuously trying to get the temperature down, if it doesn't then once again I would think a battery issue.

Do you have a battery tester?

I did test it with contents in (wors - packets).
    I don't have a battery tester
Will battery-centre be able to do the necessary test ?

Check the 12v supply cable.Spesificaly th fridge connection side. Thars why owner#1 sold it. Maybe the Fortuner connection is not supplying enough amps. All else fails your inverter power supply in th fridge is crook.

So I took the car to battery-centre.
Discovered that the second battery was only 7.4 Volts and have a dead cell.
Replaced it with a proper 80 amps deep cycle battery.
Discovered then that the second battery doesn't get charged from the alternator.
Went to auto-electrician and discovered there was a broken off wire.
Fixed that, and now back home.
Just put the Engel back and I am sure it will be fine now.
Will check in a few hours time.

I am sure the broken off wire was the culprit from the start.

    Thanks for everybody's input

Just something else to remember where my system faltered.
Bad roads can cause play in the Brad Harrison plug which can cause it not to give constant power through to your fridge/freezer.
Carry a spare with you for emergencies...
