    Default Ballito to Piet Retief

    Hi there

My name is Simon and l will be driving from Ballito to Swaziland via Piet Retief next week.

I wanted to ask members of the forum with local knowledge, whether using the R66 and R34 through Vryheid is a good option?

Is the road in good condition ? If there are lots of potholes and stray animals than I would just use the N2.

    Thanks for your help

Do you have to go thru Piet Retief?..I would just go straight up the N2
& go in at the Golela border post. we use this way to go to Kruger.

    Cheers

Is the objective to avoid tolls etc or just use an alternate route?

We did the vryheid route some time back on the way to sodwana and it was a bit of a drag. Recall some passes. Given the choice I would just go straight up the n2 and into Swazi at golela as suggested.

    Apologies for the delayed response

I am taking my wife and 2 young kids to Milwane Game reserve in Swaziland.

My reason for choosing to go via Piet Retief, is to break the journey and stop for lunch and fuel.

The route through Vryheid is 60 km shorter. But only worth it if the road is in good condition ?

Ditto..and on the N2 you can stop at the Boabab between Hluhuwe and Mkhuze for a very decent pub lunch.

R34 from N2 to Nkwaleni Valley via Eshowe is your problem area, speed restrictions down to 60 and 80 kph are frequent as well as numerous speed bumps at every school and settlement (in addition to permanent speed cameras)
Plenty farm tractors and trailers as well so you need to be vigilant.
Melmoth to Vryheid is a good road
Vryheid to Paulpietersburg not so good (potholes) but from there to Piet Retief in reasonable condition
Personally I would take previous replies advice and go via N2 all the way for a much more relaxed journey

Try the Dagwood...or crumbed pork chops...or I was going to say spareribs but saying apparently casts aspersions on one's character
