Default Suction Control Valve Kit on Isuzu KB 250 (4JK) & 300 (4JJ)

    Model: KB300 DTeq

    Year:
    2008

    Mileage:
    66000Km

    Problem:
    Suction Control Valve Kit

    Cause of problem(if known):

Service Bulletin Ref: IZ-04 Date: 05 August 2010
    Suction Valve Control Kit on Isuzu KB 250 (4JK) & 300 (4JJ)

    Problem description:
As a result of complaints from the field of poor performance, engine starting concerns and vehicles going into limp mode due to failure of the Suction Control Valve (SCV), Isuzu has introduced a more robust SCV. The high pressure pump has also been changed in the process, but the new level SCV can also be used on the older high level pressure pumps.

    Root cause:
The valve inside the SCV becomes stuck as a result of dirt contamination, and intermittent or complete failure of the SCV occurs with on or more of the following DTC's being stored: P0087, P0088, P1093 or P1094.

    Production action:
The design of the SCV has been changed in order to improve its durability and protect it against the intrusion of foreign materials.

    Field action:
Faulty SCV's must be replaced with a new level SCV. The level SCV is compatible with the early level high pressure pumps, when making use of the additional spacer, adapter and longer screws in the SCV kit.

Specifics of repair work carried out:
    Replaced Suction Control Valve

    Cost of repair:
    R2000.00

    Who did the repair:
    Thorp Plumstead

    Vehicle under warranty, Y/N:
No Manufacturers Warranty (G2 Extended Warranty)

    Was damage covered by warranty:
G2(*) Waranty did not cover. GM agreed to pay.

    Personal Experience and Comment:
As the performance problem is intermittent, I am of the opinion that there are other DTeq owners who are not aware that their Suction Control Valve is faulty or under spec.
DTeq owners, 250 and 300 alike, may experience intermittent loss of power especially when changing gears and accelerating which may be put down to a turbo lag of sorts. I experienced idling and starting problems at times. Initially when I experienced the problem more than a year ago no service light on the dash came on in my vehicle so what could I report to the Service Department, but my suspicion that diesel was part of the problem was more or less accurate according to the Service Bulletin it seems. I was filling up at the Sasol in Ottery Cape Town when my problems first started. I then changed to BP and added some two stroke oil and the problem went away, in actual fact the vehicle started to perform much better. Then my son the other day after telling him not to, filled up at the Sasol in Ottery and the very next day the performance problem reoccurred, so much so that the orange service light on the dash came on, the bakkie lost power and I had to reset it all by stopping, switching off and restarting. It was at this stage I took the vehicle in to Thorp in Plumstead who diagnosed the problem as the Suction Control Valve.
While I am suspicious that Sasol did sell contaminated diesel, the question begs that perhaps the very low sulphur content of Sasol diesel does not lubricate the working parts of the original Suction Control Valve properly, hence the sticking valve.
If you are in any doubt I suggest you should take your vehicle in and state that you suspect the SCV is giving problems with performance, starting and idling. While GM agreed to pay for my SCV replacement, it is not covered out of warranty according to the Service Bulletin, but I complained and the Service Department at Plumstead did a motivation to GM which was approved.

(*)When I bought my 2008 KB300 DTeq secondhand from Thorp it only had the 3 Year GM Warranty at the time, the salesman offered an extended warranty of 2 years and when I questioned him about the warranty insisting I wanted a GM warranty, he said yes it was a GM warranty more than once, so I bought it for about R6000 more or less. This G2 Warranty is not a GM Warranty, it is merely a Motorite Insurance Plan. Things like SCV's, injectors and the like are not covered, so basically it is not a GM Warranty as detailed by the salesman. I will never buy another G2 Warranty ever again and I hope my vehicle continues to work beyond 2013 without having to phone these insurance people ever again as it left a bad taste in my mouth. GM themselves should sell their own extended warranties, end of story.

    Model: D-Teq Ex-Cab 4x4
    Year:2007
    Mileage:95000
Problem:Brakes are either on or off. Lock up even on tar with slightest pressure. Only touchable at higher speeds. Totally uncontrollable on typical 4x4 slow travel. This vehicle has EBD and ABS, and should not do this.
Cause of problem (if known):Unknown. Reported to Isuzu Truck Centre (C Town) 3 times.
Specifics of repair work carried out:Tried 3 times. Will be forced to approach a non-franchise workshop to solve the problem
    Cost of repair:TBA
    Who did the repair:TBA
Vehicle under warranty, Y/N:No. Was when problem started. Now not any more.
Was damage covered by warranty: Now no longer under extended warranty

THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECT FROM ISUZU

    Maybe it wasn't Isuzu.
I recently replaced rear brake linings back to original OEM spec and the problem has disappeared.
It seems the non-genuine linings were too efficient.
However, I am still a bit concerned that the EBD function, which should have sorted the problem, did not.
Is the EBD working? How do I check without dealer uneducated guess-advice.
