    Default Best Bridge Camera

My wife is in the market for a new Bridge Camera. Which is the best for wildlife photography?
Currently she is using a Canon SX 30. We are thinking Nikon Coolpix P900, but is there anything else we should also look at?
Your expert advice will be appreciated as we are no experts.

Anything in particular you would like to do that you couldn't do with the SX 30?

Any reason why you are looking at a different brand?

    Hi MarcR

We find the colours and sharpness of the SX30 not as good as the Nikon P900. We made direct comparisons with a friends Nikon P900. So our question really is if there is anything better than the Nikon which we should also consider.

No I am not really brand loyal, I normally consider all products in the category I wish to purchase.

Another vote for SX60. My wife has one and I must say I (been using Canon SLR for 35 years) am impressed by what the camera can do.

    SX60, yes.

What's in the red circle on the first pic is what you see when you zoom in .. second pic .. both pics hand-held.

The SX60 has more zoom, but the SX50 had better image quality. The difference in quality are really for academics specialising in that sort of thing. For the average guys who looks at his pics on the computer screen (and don't zoom into the pic too much) won't see the difference.

Google "Superzoom Cameras" if you want to do more homework.

I doubt if anybody will still talk about the SX50, because it was replaced by the SX60.

The high end bridge cameras are NOT CHEAP, but if you can afford them, they are bloody good.

See this list. I've got the FZ1000, and it takes an unbelievable pic.

Sakkie, thanks for the link I am in the process of studying the reviews.

Basies, lyk hy soos hy in lewende lywe sou gelyk het as jy so naby aan hom was.....

Leer jou kamera ken. GOED ken.

The Nikon P900 is a much later model than your Canon SX30 so that difference is to be expected...

The Canon SX60 is the current model to compare with the P900....

The reason I asked about the brand, is because if you stick with Canon.... the learning curve is minimal, even less so, moving to a newer model in the same range....

In terms of value for money, I think the SX60 will be hard to beat.....

If you were generally happy with the SX30.... there should be no problem with the SX60....

I would want to be sure the features in the more expensive bridge cameras, justify more than double the price....

Marc's point about the price is VERY valid. Keep in mind though that with your experience growing, your needs will grow too. That means that if you buy now, make sure the camera can fill possible future needs. Again an example....Jupiter and it's four major moons at 19H00 last night. Brightest object in the eastern sky. Point and shoot.

I am currently looking at selling my new Canon 70D and a suite of lenses that I bought to replace camera and lenses stolen in Aus (Namibia) a year ago. From a safety and security point, I don't want to carry around a whole bag of photographic equipment and become a target for affirmative shopping again.

I've been looking at the SX60 mentioned in earlier posts as well as the Lumix FZ300. My wife has a FX200 bought to replace her FX18 also stolen in Aus last year. I really like the fact that these cameras have Leica lenses, even though they aren't their top flight range, they are better (I feel) than the Panasonic lenses. The zoom is about half that of the SX60, but then at 600mm, its still pretty good, and will do for most wildlife photos that I'm likely to need.

So far this has turned out to be a very interesting exercise and also got more complicated, let me explain.

This new camera is suppose to be my wife`s birthday present which is approaching very fast.

Talking to our local camera dealer Kloppers in George and Orms in Capetown I found that SX 60s are currently not available and as

mentioned, the Nikon P900 is pricey. Orms offered me a Nikon B700 as an alternative at a price just above a SX60. The specs look

quite good. So now it becomes a new ball game.

The reviews of the P900 that I've read haven't been very good. The reach is fantastic but image quality not so much. The Panasonics really are very good - I had an FZ18 years ago that was fantastic. If you don't take the Canon I would rather go for a Panasonic - the best one you can afford. The Sony bridge cameras are also very good but the good ones are VERY expensive.
