Default Tracking on Garmin Nuvi 42LM

    Hi,
Is it possible to track routes on this particular device, meaning using the GPS to track the route from where you came thus allowing getting back on the same route.
The system is loaded with Tracks 4 Africa as well.
    Thanks,
    Johan

Is this what you are asking?
The blue lines on my 42 LM?

Yes, exactly that "blue line" functionality. Sometimes, especially on a 4x4 route one lands up on a track that stop right there and you need to guide your way back the exact way you got there.
How do you enable this function.
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
Now for the second question you no doubt will know what it will be.
How do i clear previous trips on the "trip log"?
    Thanks,

Hi, the trip log cannot be deleted easily. The device has a limited number of points it keeps in memory for the log, so overtime it will delete the older points and only show newest points travelled. Hope this makes sense. The log kept in memory is not directly distance dependant because it stores points. On highway you'll see points far apart, on trial closer together.

I don't know the 42LM - does it not have a "back track" function?

Thumbs down Re: Tracking on Garmin Nuvi 42LM

I don't want to hijack this thread but I have the 42 and I am very, very disappointed with it. Driving on William Nicol and and the GPS states driving on tar........

Recalculating is a night mare, just cannot figure it out. Connected to Garmin on the internet and there is nothing, no update no maps

I will just label it junk and toss it, what else is there. Oh, the speed read out seems to be accurate!

Track back function should not be confused with a bread crumb trail.

Track back will route you with voice prompts and so on. If it doesn't have this function, you merely follow the bread crumb trail (blue line) back.

Don't know if the 42LM has the bread track back function. If it doesn't say it somewhere in the menu, then it does not.

Driving on tar will drive me mad!!

See perhaps if you did not possibly select 2 map sets at once. This will confuse the gps. This happened to me the other day. Had street maps and t4a selected simultaneously.

OOps yes, I did as well, and cannot recall doing it. Finger trouble!!

Thank you for the tip, but still not convince that it is a better buy than my old Nuvi 1310 but I cannot get maps for it.

Sadly not the best on the market. Bought for a family member who promptly got lost often. Turn left instead of right. Took it over to check and it got confused every month or so. Took it to Garmin and they instantly gave me a new one without even asking my name?
New one also gets lost now and then....

Have you added T4A to your GPS? When you add a new map, the GPS leave both maps ticked, and yes it completely confuses itself when trying to navigate. So each time I load new maps I always check which map is ticked.

[QUOTE: Driving on William Nicol and and the GPS states driving on tar........ [/QUOTE]

Before 2016 T4A seldom had street names in cities, as our focus is on off-road tracks. So if you have a T4A map loaded that is older than 2016, and the map is activated while driving on William Nicol, the GPS will tell you "driving on tar". Since 2016 we have added city maps and street names to T4A, so if you have a 2016 T4A map loaded, and the map is activated while driving on William Nicol, it should say "driving on William Nicol".

We used open source maps to load the streets, so there is some room for error (especially name changes, road closures and new roads), we are working hard on fixing these. If anybody has any corrections on our maps, it would be much appreciated if you can email it to newdata@tracks4africa.co.za.

At the Cape Getaway show many people complained about this - I want to update my 2013 street maps on my Montana, so am interested to see what they will say!

    Hi Lizette,

Thank you for all the information, much appreciated.

With due respect, I don't use T4A maps in the city but when on the road yours are the best.

On the other hand, in the city, the GPS on my phone with Google maps works well and saved the day on a few occasions.

I hope we can get a response from Garmin.......?

    Regards
    Chris
