Default Searching For Campsites,Backpackers,Places Of Interest, Mountain Passes And Eateries

After a nightmare 2 hour drive in mist as thick as soup, we eventually got to Castleburn Resort on Friday night for our wedding anniversary weekend. Super friendly staff, and a beautiful resort in one of my favorite parts of Kzn. The experience was unfortunately marred by Mother Nature unleashing all sorts of hell all over the province, which knocked out the power in Underberg and surrounds from 16h00 on Saturday. We left early on Sunday as there still was no power to cook or shower, and certainly too cold and wet for a brekkie braai. I have included some pics of the resort, as well as the beautiful area in which it is situated.

Whilst exploring the area around Castleburn, we found a real gem, and the potential venue for SWAMBO's birthday weekend next year. Lake Navarone is incredibly beautiful and tranquil, plus the reception staff and management were very welcoming and accommodating. Simply gorgeous, and each cabin has its own jetty and rowing boat.

A must for every cheese lover......Underberg Cheesery has an incredible range of delicious cheeses......helpful and knowledgeable staff, and some thought provoking slogans. A large variety of jams, preserves and fiery relishes are also on offer.

No power in Underberg meant nowhere to eat.....so after a bit of an exploration on the way back to Durban North we found The Chantecler Hotel hidden away in Hillcrest. Idyllic setting, with a hearty buffet on a Sunday for a mere 130 Ronts. Large population of vocal peacocks in residence, in what is a really picturesque wedding venue as well.

My favorite part of the berg that. Drakensberg Gardens Hotel is also lovely. Best views in the berg from the Fairways timeshares. I am biased since I've done a bunch of work there over the years.

Stunning place Markus, spent a week there in October last year. Nearly died from the cold and had to buy a pair of tracksuit pants in Underberg as I found out quickly that shorts ain't gonna cut it for this Zululand chap. Caught trout in the dam and pan fried on the coal stove ( foreign thing for us the coal stove) and just had a hell of a time there.

Got some nice pics of Rhino and the lake at Naverone in the mist.

Great weekend away with the Kzn mini GTG at False Bay....we both loved the absolute tranquility and the opportunity to meet fellow forum members. It was rather exhilarating observing wild game off a mountain bike.....this was obviously before Riaan informed us that the park does have some resident leopards.....

Wow, what an entertaining and interesting post.
We also like this touring thing and seeing new and interesting places.
There is a beautiful mountain pass within your range, but in the north eastern region of the Eastern Cape.
From Kokstad take the N2 to Mt. Ayliff. A few kliks further on you take the turn-off to Tabankulu. This is a tar road with taxi's and people at the intersection which is well marked, so you cannot miss it. Go another 17 kliks to Tabankulu and carry straight through the village on gravel towards Flagstaff. This is a 44 km gravel stretch and very scenic drive starting in mountain forest similar to the dune field of northern Natal and then the scenic mountain Pass with a sharp drop-off on the northern side in which the Mzintlava River flows. The road crosses the Mzintlava River at the bottom of the Pass and then climbs out the other side, to where it joins the tar road again about 10 kliks south of Flagstaff.
From there you can either travel to Flagstaff on the R61 and on to Bizana and the South Coast, or,
Turn right (south) on the R61 to Lusikisiki and Port St. Johns.
I have done this Pass in both directions and it gives you a different perspective when doing it in the opposite direction.
Thanks again Markus and Zelda for this informative and interesting thread with fantastic pictures to boot...

Glad you enjoy what has become a very enjoyable personal labour of love.

The drive up from De Beers Pass through Eerem to Normandien Pass.....definitely worth a drive.....unfortunately could not get to Collins Pass due to time constraints.....will have to do it again from the Newcastle side...
